History of the Poor Farm Grounds:  Beginning as a farm of the Alphadelphia Association,  a utopian community,  what is now River Oaks Park became a County Park in 1972, but has been County property since 1849.  Prior to becoming a County Park, River Oaks had first been the Countys Poor Farm and then the Countys Rest Home.  River Oaks is located on M-96 between Comstock and Galesburg.

Fragility threatens historic papers

"The Kalamazoo County Poor Farm opened on what is now River Oaks Park in the mid-1800s and provided a place for indigent residents. It was known by various names over the years, including the Kalamazoo County House and Kalamazoo County Rest Home before closing in the 1970s.

There is little written about the farm's residents, except for what is in an aging ledger in the county clerk's vault. It tells stories of destitute residents like John W. Downey, who was 69 when he came to the poor farm May 19, 1897, and died there less than three months later. He was buried on the grounds.

Others, like Clara Sheeler, were single, unwed mothers who would spend years on the farm. Sheeler was 25 and pregnant when she arrived Sept. 18, 1895. She gave birth to Floyd Sheeler on April 27, 1896, and was discharged two years later. Her child eventually was sent to the state school in Coldwater."
