MARTIN COOK
-------------------

The body of this early resident of Allegan was brought here for burial Tuesday and the funeral was held that afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.D. Lewis.

Martin Cook was born in the Netherlands in 1838 and came to this country with the famous Van Raalte colony. With his brothers he soon established himself in Allegan and for years he was an employee of the late N.B. West in the latter's mills. His brothers were Henry and Albert Cook, both residents of Allegan at the present time. He became an active politician early in life and was a shrewd, adept Democrat upon whom the Republicans could always count for a battle.

He was county treasurer one term in the early seventies and township treasurer several terms. For some time he served as railway mail clerk between Allegan and Muskegon and then secured an appointment from the state as an officer in the Ionia reformatory and was so engaged until his death. He had been a steady resident of that city twenty-two years.

Last year Mr. and Mrs. Cook celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Death was due to paralysis brought on by an attack of acute indigestion. He died Saturday morning.

His children are Mrs. H.D. Lewis of Allegan, Henry of Ionia, Mrs. L H. Pitchard of Kalamazoo, Fred of Ionia, Harm of Jackson, Mrs. Mary Stockdale of Ypsilanti, Mrs. Carl Newman of Ionia, and Martin of Ionia. These with a niece, Mrs. Jennie Parrish of Traverse City and a grandson William Pritchard of Kalamazoo, attended the funeral here. The four sons and two grandsons, Grover and Edward Cook acted as pallbearers. Rev. A.V. Brashear officiated. The widow survives and came to Allegan with the body.

Martin Cook is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan, Michigan, next to his wife Mary Cornelia (Kries) Cook and two of his son's, Thomas M. Cook and Fred W. Cook and his brothers, Henry and Albert Cook and their wives.
