EMAIL ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS to the Allegan County Coordinator

Valley Township cemetery on Section 6 has been abandoned for many years. It was originally called Pine Plains Cemetery, but the surveying in 1831 reorganized Pine Plains Township to the current Valley Township in 1850. The Pine Plains Cemetery became the Valley Township Cemetery.

Some of the death records in this area may reference Clyde Township. In 1837 when the first settlers arrived, this area was a portion of Newark Township, in 1850, it became a portion of Pine Plains Township. In 1860, this area became Clyde Township. Not confusing it with Clyde Township on the east side of Michigan. Yes, there are two Clyde Townships in Michigan. In the book History of Allegan and Barry Counties, (1880) page 314 says, "it was the second cemetery laid out near the west township line of Section 6. It is comparatively new and has yet but few interments have taken place within its borders."

Valley Township has a document that states that Mr. Fred Kingsley of Allegan, Mich. M.h.5 who is the sexton of the other Valley Township burial ground - Millgrove Cemetery - wrote June 25,1940 of the old graveyard on Section 6, "that it is not used any more, and that as late as 1672, there was an Indian settlement near the cemetery. Some Indians, as well as white people, were buried there. He thought there were three monuments there now. His father, George Kingsley was born near that cemetery in 1858.

The now, wilderness area of the Valley Township Cemetery is about 3 miles north of Round Lake on 48th Street and northeast of 123rd Ave. An old schoolhouse was across the street.
