John Raby has recovered and is back to work. So has CA Westcott.

D- on Sat. the 1st inst at res. of son-in-law, Ledlie Burt, Mrs. Henry Merchant, age 74. She was one of oldest settlers in the county, but early moved to Kalamo, Eaton Co., where she lived until last fall. An aged companion & 6 children are left to mourn her loss.

Geo. E Davis sold his grocery stock to DC Howe of Parma.

Homer in Flames - 7 business houses & 1 home gone – loss over $14,000. Insurance, not even $4,000. Fire broke out at 3 am this morning, in the building owned by N Eslow, on Main St and occupied by Gorham the grocer. The whole row of business places on N side of Main St, east of Sophia, now is in ruins. No hook and ladder were ready to fight the fire, only buckets and water. (Note: lengthy article on losses and businesses involved as well as relocations after the fire)

Warner Circus will be in Homer May 11, 1876.

Hook & Ladder truck is complete & painted up in quite a dashy manner.

GA Lindley from Union City opened a clothing store on corner of Main & Sophia.

D- Thurs., May 4, Charley, youngest son of Daniel & Ella Turner, at age 5, of diphtheria.

D- Fri., May 5, Daisy Loretta, only daughter of Chas. A & Jessie Westcott, age 2y,8m,27d.

Parties have begun to talk about building on the burnt district. It is our opinion that Common Council will not allow wooden buildings built within the fire limits hereafter.

AH Blair is now turning out fine flour.

MW Hatch put up a fence around his cellar on corner of Main & Sophia, where his buildings burned last week. Others should do the same. Post office is now in Allen Bros. building, 1st door W of IK Henshaw's.

JM Palmer now has best stock of groceries in Homer & at starvation prices.

Resolved: that a committee of 3 be appointed to draft by- laws for the government of a hook & ladder company & a bucket brigade. Resolved: that 20 efficient men be selected to constitute the hook & ladder company. Resolved: the committee on fire dept. be authorized to procure the necessary equipment for the village hook & ladder truck without delay. Committee was instructed to see if barn belonging to Mrs A Arthur can be procured for the hook & ladder truck & at what rent. Also appointed to visit Marshall to examine the fire engine "Deluge", with a view of purchasing.

Parks & Pratt, bankers, will put up a new brick building.

Richardson House, which was scorched by the fire, has new paint job.

JB Green has broken ground on corner Leigh & Sophia to put up new steam grist mill.

Mrs. MJ Linton will put up a new brick building on site of her old building.

Common Council is talking about putting up a brick building to be used for Council Rooms, Justice Offices, Lock Up & Engine House when we get our engine. We hope it will not simply be talk.

D- May 18, Thurs., Dennison Fowler, age 73, at home of Henry Failing. Deceased was deaf mute, born in Madison Co., NY. He was educated at NY Institute for Deaf & Dumb, after which he returned to Peterboro, his birth place, and made shoes. He came to Homer in 1865 and had many friends.

Common Council learned that Mrs Arthur's barn could be leased for 75 cents per week, with a 1 year lease. They are studying plans & cost for a building.

Village to raise by taxes $250 for streets and $750 for general purposes, including fire dept. funds.

Business directory is in Index this week for the village.

Mr Harrington opened shoe shop in 2nd story of building on S side of Main St, occupied on 1st floor by D Dorsey & JJ Banford.

WD Swinton, student at Auburn Seminary, has been engaged by the Presby. Church during Pastor Gerrish's 3 month vacation.

Parks & Pratt have broken ground for new bank, 1st start on the burnt district.

Ice Cream Social - Sons of Temperance, at home of James Cook.

School board - HA Bunnell contract for another year. Grammar school to Miss Anna Wood, Intermediate to Mrs HA Bunnell, Primary to Miss Kate Westcott. Miss Elsie Scott, presently primary teacher, did not apply for next year. Salary of principal was reduced $100, making it $800.

Jackson & Calhoun County are nearly equal in population and have same number of school children, 11,388. Apportionment of school money is same as last year - 50 cents per child, or $5,694.

D- Eugene, son of Henry Palmer, age 17, of dropsy, at home in Clarendon June 15.

RR rates - MCRR - present rates from Homer are: Philadelphia $10.30, NY $11.45, Boston $12.45.

D- Wm. Mansfield, age 51, lived here 20 years, died at his home 2 miles S of village. He came from Albany NY. Funeral at Presby. Church.

Common Council - estimated cost of engine house & lot $1900.

Strike - at Common council - wages of laborers in the corporation were reduced from $1.50 to $1.25 per day and the result was adjournment of all hands next morning and no work is being done yet.

Complaint about boys bathing down at the mill pond in sight and near houses in E part of village. There is an ordinance against same & we think the Marshal only needs a hint to seethat it is enforced.

CA Westcott has gone to Colorado to see if the climate will help his health.

Why is it that cows are left running at large in the streets and people's gardens at night, when there is an ordinance prohibiting same?

John Powers bought & shipped from here during year ending July 15, 95,000 bushels wheat, 20,000 bu. oats and he is only one of 4 buyers here. This is the best grain market in the county.

E Richardson sold billiard hall to Potter & McCartney.

Foundation begun on Mrs. Linton's brick building on burnt district.

Engine House foundation wall will be 2 feet thick, height of rooms 12 ft in clear & above 14 ft.

Council - cut 11 feet off brick store which encroaches on Main St. and rebuild front. Building belongs to Mrs Austin.

Council - adopted general outlines of Union City engine house for ours, advertise for bids.

D- Peter Mitchell, Clarendon, Aug. 29, age 57. Born 10-2-1819 Meredith, Delaware Co., NY. Married 9-2-1846 to Frances Newcomb. She survives, also 2 dau. & 1 son. One son died earlier. He came to Mich. in 1850 & settled in "stone house" or Barney Farm, a part of which he platted, and called Mitchell's Addition to the Village of Homer. 5 or 6 yearslater, he exchanged farms with S Cook and moved to the "Plains" - a mile west of village, in Clarendon.

D- the 9th inst., Eseck Hopkins, age 87, in the village on Saturday.

Masonic has leased the hall over Parks & Pratt's new bank building for a term of years and will move in January.

Peaches & Cream Social - at home of EH Cook, Eckford Twp.,by Sons of Temperance.

Post office has been removed into the corner store in Lyon's block, which is the nicest place in the village for same.

D- Eseck Hopkins, died at home of son, HL Hopkins, in village on the 9th inst., had resided in village since 1854, was born Foster, Rhode Island, 2-2-1789 and was 87 years old. He married Huldah Snider, of Courtland, NY, on 10-13-1813. She died 10-30-1874.

 

From Lyons, NY paper - autobiographical sketch of Milton Barney. Born New Marlborough, Berkshire Co., Mass. 2-3-1796. Married Sophia Dorsey, at home of her father, Daniel Dorsey,

7-13-1820. She was the 14th child in her family. In 1823 we moved from Lyons to Michigan, going by canal boat to Buffalo, up Lake Erie by Steamer to Detroit, then on out to Jackson, where we stayed a few weeks. I went out on St Joseph Trail, leading toward Chicago, bought 160 acres of

land at crossing of the S branch of Kalamazoo River, built a log house & moved in fall of 1832. I built a saw mill & laid out a town plat - called Barneyville and built a store & hotel & large stone dwelling. In 1838, I built a ME Church,which cost $4000 and is still used.

Homer is thriving - 2 railroads going through, one from Jackson to St. Joe or Chicago, the other Jonesville to State Capitol. In 1844 I sold the stone house in Homer for the Steamboat Hotel in Detroit and ran it until itburned in 1847, moved to Chicago in 1849, then to Sacramento in 1852, and have been in California nearly 24 years - half of this time keeping hotels or boarding houses. My wife died September last. I have 8 children, 3 have died,5 dau all are married and have families.

Teacher examinations for the township will be at the High School room Saturday, Oct. 21. B Fancher, Supt.

The contract for the engine house was let to WH McCartney of this village, for $2,360.

D- in village, Wed., the 20th inst. of diphtheria, Ida J,youngest dau. of Thos B Isham, age 10 yrs.

$3,230 was paid school teachers, by the township for the year ending 9-6-1876. Of this $1,543.75 was paid to males, $1,686.25 to females.

D- wife of Abram Vreeland of Clarendon, yesterday, of diphtheria.

D- dau. of Abram Vreeland, wife of Wm. Kennedy, died in Clarendon also of diphtheria, 2 weeks ago.

DM McConnell is in town seeing people about getting up a history of Calhoun County.

BF Goodrich has the large brick store full of best assorted stock - hardware, stoves, housefurnishings, etc.

A tramp broke into the home of JH Bacon, 3 miles S of village, was caught and sentenced to 4 years in the State Prison. His name is Joseph E Benson.

D- at home of PA Harrington of Clarendon, Monday, the 2nd inst., Aaron VanNess, age 84. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 - in company of Capt. Morehouse, NY militia. He was born in New Jersey April 25, 1793, lived many years inMendon, Monroe Co, NY. Had lived with his dau., Mrs PA Harrington for several years.

JB Brooks leased the "Old Ashery" building and converted it to a cider mill.

Pole raising- Democrats of Clarendon will raise hickory pole at res. of JK Wolvertine, good speakers will be there.

James Linton has gone into the draying business.

M- at res. of Almond Hopkins, Oct. 11, by Rev. N Fassett, Abram L Cotton & Miss Rebecca M Hoffman, both of Homer.

D- Mary, wife of Philander Brooks, age 65, Oct. 4. She was born Wayne Co., NY where she married Mr. B., who survives her. She lived in this county since 1836 and in place where she died for 24 years. She had no children of her own, but raised others.

Auction - IL Cook estate, Eckford - the largest sale ever in this section.

D- Killed by RR cars - LW Mitchell, in employ of Strong & Swift of Chicago, was in charge of a train of stock bound for Buffalo, was run over Sat. last at Clarendon station & died at Richardson House. He was 25 yrs old.

New state hospital at Univ. of Mich. is ready for patients. Medical & surgical services, no charge, except room, board, etc.

TS Dorsey of this place has purchased of Harrison Busley, the dwelling on Main St, formerly owned by John Snider.

King P Allen has exchanged his house & lot on Leigh St and his entire interest in shop of Allen Bros. with John Vroman, for his farm in Eckford.

M- in Grass Lake, Oct. 19 at home by Rev. OFA Spinning, Wells Pratt, of Parks & Pratt, bankers, & Miss Nettie C Spinning, only dau. of the officiating clergyman.

Council - resolution to Township Board of Health, related to opening of Hillsdale St., north to township cemetery.

D- at her res. Oct. 25, Mrs Lovinia, wife of James Worthington, in her 68th yr. She came here about 30 years ago from western NY. Member of Presby. Church since 6-3-1848

John Reese, living 7 miles west of here, attempted to murder his wife and then shot himself last Thursday.

John Fox & wife left home near Lyon Lake 3 weeks ago to go to the Centennial, leaving 3 grown daughters at home. Scarlet fever struck them - two have died and the other is very ill, parents cannot be reached at this time.

Geo. Westcott opening dry goods, grocery & notion store at old stand, formerly occupied by CA Westcott on Main St.

There are over 500 voters in this township. Upwards of 80 new names were added to the township register on Saturday.

D- Hannah M Morrison, wife of John, at res. in Parma, Nov. 28, age 38.

D- in Pulaski, Nov. 25, Sarah Ann Tillotson, wife of John, & oldest dau. of Mrs. MA Hatch of Homer. She was born E Granville, Hampton Co., Mass, Mar. 12, 1828 and came here

6-10-1835. She leaves aged mother, husband, 6 children. Buried next to father & a son in Homer Cemetery.
