Clendenen Famiily

Bible Records  |  Lee Notebook  |  Notes  |  More Materials

When I was searching my papers for these records I came across copies of a notebook sent to me by my cousin, kept by Herbert Alton Lee of Dowagiac with 16 pages of family names, dates and notes. This record lists the surnames: Barnum, Orr, Carpenter, Foster, Perry, Otto, Barnhart, Bauer, and Clendenen, with the most recent date being 1934.

Notes: This Bible is currently in the possession of Lyman Bybee, of Niles, MI. Lyman notes that the publication date of the Bible was 1829, the year Oscar Clendenen was born and the inside front cover of the Bible has the words "Oscar F. Clendenen Bible". The back pages of the Bible has the words "Mary Ann Clendenen's Bible 1851".  We believe that this Bible must have been given to Mary Ann Clendenen by Oscar shortly before she died in Sept.1851.  The majority of the names and dates appear in the back pages of the Bible.  All of the references I have seen for these Bible Records refer to them as "Mary Ann Clendenen's Bible Records".

The date for William I. Clendenen, which was not filled in, is b. 11 July 1832

From my research so far, the name Susan Hinghman  must be a misspelling, and they must have meant Susan Hinchman.  I have seen gedcoms listing the wife of Hiram Hinchman as Susanna Riggins, who died in Berrien Co. MI. but have not researched it, so I am not sure.

Herbert Alton Lee's Notebook

Dowagiac, Michigan

Note from Lyman Bybee:
This information is from a notebook with HERBERT ALTON LEE'S name on the inside of cover. There is a 3 year calendar printed inside the back cover for the years 1927, 28, 29.  I assume the info. was gathered during that time.

More Information

[This information] turned out to be the most important ... so far, as it contain[s] a lot of information that nobody else seems to know about. I came by it in a rather convoluted way through a gedcom and while the person who sent it to me only knew which relative of his that the list came from, when I saw the actual copies of the lists, I knew who wrote it {my aunt} and where she got her information from. {Sarah Jane Clendenen's papers} ... I have to tell you that a lot of the information on the original list was just a little "off", but it provided me with enough information and clues that I have been able to figure out where the mistakes are and find documentation to verify everything except a couple of items.  The problem with putting it on the web just as it is without listing the correct information and documentation is that  some of the information is just "wrong" enough to start a whole new cycle of misinformation and I would really like to avoid that if possible. It is very annoying to me to find Gedcoms that continually regurgitate the same incorrect information. When I first received the list my goal was to verify as much as I possibly could so that I would know that the information that I have been unable to verify is most likely correct also.  I have spent the past 4 months tracking down these people and verifying that they existed, which is the only reason I am comfortable putting this list out there.  So, here goes...I realize this is lengthy, but I also believe it is important to know where these lists came from.

These two lists were sent to me by Don LeClair.  He came across them in genealogical research notes and papers that had been gathered by his 2nd great aunt, Helena Clendenen {1871-1950}.  The lists were written on personalized stationaery belonging to Lugene Clendenen, {1926-1998} {my aunt}, in her handwriting.  The heading on both lists mentions "Sarah's Grandfather" & "Sarah's Great Grandfather".  From Sarah Jane Clendenen's {1861-1949} obituary I have found out that she spent the last year of her life in the home of her cousin, Earl O. Clendenen, {1893-1908} my grandfather, Lugene's father.  When Sarah died it was my grandfather who was responsible for dealing with Sarah's house and property.  What I believe happened was that sometime in the 1940s, Helena Clendenen asked Lugene Clendenen to go through Sarah's papers and see if she could find any family information and requested that she copy down what she found and send to Helena.  {Helena was also Sarah's 1st cousin}

This first list appears to have come from Mary Ann Clendenen's Bible Records for the most part.

Sarah's Grandfather

Robert Anderson CLENDENEN
"ANDERSON" his mother's maiden name - Born Nov. 8. 1802  Married Amanda HINCHMAN, July 13, 1827
Robert A. died Sept 14, 1851
Amanda HINCHMAN CLENDENEN born April 1st, 1809 - died Sept. 7th, 1886

Mother & Father of:

Mary Ann - born April 24, 1828
Oscar F.  - born Dec. 20, 1829
William Issac - born July 11, 1832
Van Buren - born Feb. 9, 1835
John Floyd - born April 11, 1837
David Kemper - Sept. 4, 1839
Irving - born Dec 21, 1841
George  - born Dec. 4, 1844
Martha Ann - born April 16, 1847
Sarah Jane - born May 4, 1849

Notes:
1) The book "Marriage Bonds of Pike Co. KY, 1822-1865" by Clyde Runyon, c. 1984, records a letter dated 12 July 1827 stating that she "is 22 years old and willing to intermarry with Mr. Robert Clendenon" signed by Amanda Hinchman and attested by Jeremiah Farmer and Nancy Clendenon.  At that time, Amanda was only 18 years old.  Every family record and census record subsequently prove this, as well as the year of birth on her headstone, which is 1809.

2) This list is the only place that mentions Robert's mother's maiden name so far.

3)John Floyd Clendenen married under the name Floyd Clendenen to Josephine Whipple in LaSalle Co. IL. in 1875

4) This list is the only place I have seen David Kemper Clendenen, as he died in 1841 at age 11/2, in VA.

5) Irving is listed everywhere else as Andrew Irwin Clendenen.  He was also Helena Clendenen's father.

This next list is where the information gets really interesting. Several of these children are easily found on the Internet, but some of them have never been mentioned before.  This is the first time that I have seen them all connected to the same family at the same time.

Sarah's Great Grandfather

Robert CLENDENEN born Jan 9th, 1768
Martha "ANDERSON" CLENDENEN born April 4, 1772

Children of Robert CLENDENEN & Martha (ANDERSON) CLENDENEN born in Virginia:

Winnie - unmarried - died in Virginia
Polly - married - Alax McNealey - lived in West Virginia
Julia - married - Nimrod Farley - Plat Co. Missouri
Dorcas - not married - Died in Virginia
Elmer - went to Missouri and married there
Nancy - married - Filip Ballard - lived in Stomer Ind.
John - married - Polly McKinnie - Kanoy W. Virginia
Robert - married - Amanda Hinchman - Michigan
Archibald - married - Shadie Pennelton - Jiles or Jiles Co. VA.
Adam - married - Sarah Jane Gillens - Galeton, Davis Co. MO.
Amanda - married - James Russel - went to MO

NOTES:
1)  This Robert Clendenen is the son of Adam Clendinen and Winifred ______? of Montgomery Co. VA.  There is an 1817 Giles Co. VA deed from CLENDENEN to GORE, which specifically mentions "Robert Clendenen and Martha his wife" several times, but to date there has been no marriage record found.

2) WINNIE: I was unable to find any documentation for this child, however since Robert's mother was named Winifred, it is very possible they named their first daughter Winifred.

3) POLLY: This is MARY H. CLENDENEN. She married ALEXANDER McNEELY and is well documented and known about.

4) DORCAS: The book GILES COUNTY MARRIAGE BONDS 1806-1853 from the Virginia Historic Marriage Register, by John Vogt & William Kethley Jr., by Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia, 1985 {from microfilm reels 21-25 from the Virginia State Library, Archives Division as the source} states that the permission letter written by Robert Clendenen, father of Archibald S. Clendenen, for permission to marry Shada Pennington {March 1822} was attested to by JULET PENNINGTON and DORCAS PENNINGTON.  This is incorrect.  From GILES COUNTY VIRGINIA MARRIAGE BONDS 1821-1830 {LDS Family History Library microfilm # 1928297} this letter was attested to by JULET CLENDENEN & DORCAS CLENDENEN.   {I have copies of the actual documents}

5) ELMER:  24 Oct. 1838 Logan Co. deed from the "heirs of Robt. Clendenen Dec'd" to Eli Gore. {Book B. Pg 125}.  Heirs listed are: R.A. Clendenen, Adam Clendenen, Nimrod Farley & Juliet his wife, Alexander McNeely & Polly his wife, James Russell and Amanda his wife, & ELMORE Clendenen. Signed: R.A. Clendenen, Adam Clendenen, Nimrod Farley, Julet Farley, Alexander McNeely, Mary McNeely, ELMAR Clendenen.

ELMER/ELMORE/ELMAR was the most difficult one of these children to locate, as I had a list that specifically states that this person "went to Missouri and married there".  At this date {Mar. 2002} I am convinced that ELMORE was a female and she did not marry in Missouri.  I have found an E. Clendennin in the 1860 Platte Co. Marshall Twp. MO census, occ: hired woman, with a son, Robt. age 6, living with the Sullivan family. {Pg. 859} She is living with Family # 1234.

What leads me to believe that this E. Clendennin is actually Elmore is that Amanda Russel is Family # 1296 & Juliet Farley is Family # 1299 in this same county and township.  The 1850 Platte Co. Marshall Twp. MO census shows Charles A. Farley {son of Juliet} living 2 houses down from this same Sullivan family {pg. 338}.  The 1870 Platte Co. Weston P.O. MO census, pg. 496, clearly spells out the name Elmore Clendenen, age 53, f, keeps house, Robert Clendenen, age 16, m, laborer.

6) NANCY: She married PHILIP BALLARD and they lived in St. Omer, Decatur Co. IN.  I contacted the Decatur Co. IN GenWeb and requested a look-up from John Ballard.  It turned out that Nancy & Philip Ballard were his ggg grandparents.  They had been unable to locate marriage documents and Nancy's maiden name was unknown to them.

7) JOHN: Married Mary "Polly" McKinney.  "Kanoy" must have meant KANAWHA. This family is also well documented.

8) ARCHIBALD: The list names Shadie Pennelton and Jiles.  Records show here name was SHADA PENNINGTON, and they lived in GILES CO. VA.

9) ADAM:  The list names SARAH JANE GILLENS, However, census records show her name to be MARY JANE.  There is some confusion regarding her surname.  It was recorded in the marriage documents as GILLERLAND but family records claim it was GILLILAN.   The 1850, 1860, & 1870 Daviess Co. MO census show that they lived in the same area as several other GILLILAN families.

10) AMANDA:  2 May 1851, James Russel bought 80 acres in Platte Co. MO.
6 Aug. 1851,  Andrew Russel is on record representing the estate of James Russel, deceased, stating that his father died without a will, and left a wife and six children. Andrew, Francis, Lovina, Ryland, Mary Jane, & James M. Russel.
Amanda Russel is in the 1860 Platte Co. MO census with 3 children, Ryland, Mary Jane and James M.
