Carroll, Claudus - Carroll, Claudus ( Claude ) son of Lewis and Ella Carroll was born December 12, 1893, in Charleston, South Carolina. (He) died, Saturday January 29, 1944, 9:30pm, at Veterans Hospital, Hines, Ill.(Illinois) Aged 51 years, - he spent his childhood in Bamberg, South Carolina, and went to the State College at Orangeberg, South Carolina and earned his degree in law at Howard University in Wash. (Washington) D.C. He practiced law in Gary, Indiana for seven years where because of ill health he came to Calvin Center, Michigan and began to regain health through farming. On August 31, 1925 he married Leah Frances Miller, a teacher in Atlantic City, New Jersey. One child, Diana was born to this union. Cays, Lewis William - Cassopolis, MI - Oct 5, 1953 - Cassopolis - Lewis William Cays, 86, retired village fire marshall, died at 2 a. m. today at his home here following an illness of two years.
   Cays was born Feb 7, 1867, in Cassopolis the son of Terry A. and Mary Roberson Cays. He retired 10 years ago from active duty as a village official. He was married Jan 13, 1890 to Olie A. Miller, who survives.
   Also surviving are two sons, Avery B. and Robert M., both Cassopolis; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. George Groves, Cassopolis.
   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Connelly Funeral Homer here with the Rev. Joseph I. Lindsay assisted by Paul Aurand officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today.

Cays, Marjorie May - died Sep 3, 1974 Lee County, FLA. - Cassopolis... Mrs. Marjorie May Cays, 71, of North Fort Myers, Fla., died at 3:30 a.m. Monday in Lee Convalescent Center in Fort Myers after an extended illness.
   She was born in Cass County and moved to Fort Myers from Cassopolis 12 years ago.
  On Sep 14, 1926 she married Robert Cays in Whitehall, Mich. He died Aug 9, 1962.
   Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today in the Harvey Funeral Home in Fort Myers. Graveside services weill be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, in Cassopolis, with the Rev. Joseph Wood of the United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call at the Connelly Funeral Home after 8 p.m. Friday. Cays obits contributed by; genealogist researcher Brett Hardesty.

Cays, Robert M. died August 9, 1962 = Cassopolis; Funeral Services for Robert M. Cays, 63, 214 S. Rowland St., who died Thursday, will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the Connelly Funeral Home, with the Rev. Fred McNeil, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Prospect Hills Cemetery.
   Mr. Cays was born April 28, 1999, in Jefferson Township; he lived his lifetime in this area. He married Marjorie Hess, Sept. 4, 1926 at Whitehall, Mich. She survives.
    Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Olia Cays, this city; a son, Kenneth Cays, Phoenix, Ariz,; a brother, Avery Cays, this city; and four grandchildren.
Friends are being received at the funeral home.

MARCELLUS PIONEER MAN DIES

Herman L. CHAPMAN, a pioneer business man of Marcellus, died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter in that village, Mrs. Rena Myers, aged 74 years.  Death was the result of an attack of pneumnoia.

Mr. Chapman was born in Newberg township March 20, 1849, a son of Amory and Lucinda HASTINGS CHAPMAN. He was a half-brother of H. S. Chapman, a prominent Penn farmer lately deceased.  He came to Marcellus in the early seventies and engaged in business as a gunsmith,  having his shop in a building just west of the G. W. Jones Exchange bank, later bought by the Baptist society and remodelled into a church.  He increased his business by adding a stock of hardward and conducted this for several years.  He invented a portable forge, and also manufactured the Chapman engine, which was created by him.  Mrs. Chapman died about 10 years ago.  He leaves two daughters, Mrs. ola Welker of Dowagiac, and Mrs. Rena myers of Marcellus.  He was a believer int spiritualism, and delivered lectures on the subject.  He was also an author.  Best of all, he was an honest man.  Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon.   Submitted by Cathy O'Hare

Chapman - Jeremiah B. Chapman, - Dec 25, 1914, Casopolis, Vigilant - J. B. Chapman died in Chicago. Had Been a Resident of Cassopolis Over Sixty Years
   Jeremiah B. Chapman was born April 04, 1838 at Milford, Ohio. In 1844, when he was six years old, his parents camt to Michigan, settling in Niles. August 9, 1852 they moved to Cassopolis. In 1857, at the age of 19 yeras, he was married to Miss Emily S. Harper, who passed away January 5, 1902. (She's buried Prospect Hill Cemetery)
To them were born four children, Eddie Clyde, who died when two years old; Carrietta, now Mrs. Charles J. Bour of Chicago; Lowella B. Thompson, who died in Ypsilanti in August 1902, and Dan. H. Chapman, who is a resident of Cassopolis. Mr. Chapman learned the trade of shoemaking with his father, Sylvanus S. Chapman, and in 1859, in partnershp with Henry Shaffer, now deceased, engaged in business for himself. After several years partnership this firm was dissolved and in 1800 and '70 Mr. Chapman built the bruick building next to the First National Bank. (now occupied by his son Dan as a restaurant and established retain shoe store in connection with the manufacture of boots and shoes. After several years successful business he sold his stock to Read & Yost then in the corner store now occupied by Slocum & Baker, and entered their employ. AFter a few years he again established himnself in the shoe business in his own building, and in 1877 took in Jas. H. Aarnum as partner, and under the firm name of Chapman & Farnum they conducted the business for ten years. He then bought his partner's interest and managed the business for ten years when he sold to A. B. rudd and has not sinde been in active business. About three years ago his eyesight commenced to fail, and for the last couple of years he has been totally blind. He has lived part of the time in Cassopolis with his son and part of the time with his daughter in Chicago. About four weeks ago he went to the city, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bour, Sunday, December 20, at 2:00 P. M.
   He leaves besides a son and daughter several grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. W. H. Mansfield, of Chicago, a brother, Dr. E. K. K. Chapman, of Defiance, Ohio and other relatives.
   The body was brought to Cassopolis Monday, and funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday at........ remainder of article cut off.

Cassopolis, Michigan, August 5, 1897 page 1   -  Lucindy Hastings Chapman was born in the township of Salisbury, Herkimer county, N.H. October 1819. In 1836 she moved to Medina county, Ohio where she married Amory H. Chapman in the year 1838. In the spring of 1845 she moved with her husband to Cass county, Michigan and settled in Newberg township, where she lived for more than half a century. She was the mother of two sons -- H.S. Chapman of Penn, Mich. with whom she lived the past winter, and H.L. Chapman of Marcellus, with whom she was living at the time of her death -- July 26, 1897. Besides the two sons, she leaves one foster daughter -- Mrs. Libbie Binear* [last name blurred] , of Salmo; B.C. ;four grandchildren and one great grand-son to revere her memory. One brother, Horace Hastings of Menlo [Iowa] is the only one now living of a family of eleven brothers and sisters. Having lived to the age of nearly 85 yeary [sic], she had outlived most of her generation but the memories of Aunt "Cindy" wrought into the hearts of the younger generations, of relatives, friends and neighbors, is the most worthy monument that can ever be raised to her memory and a more eloquent eulogy than words can express.

Daniel Clock - St. Joseph Herald Oct.25, 1879 - DIED - At his residence in Dowagiac last Wednesday morning, Daniel clock, age 92. Only a few weeks ago the death of Mrs. Clock was chronicled, and the couple who have passed neraly 67 years together were only seperated by a brief space of time. The were married in 1812, and came to Michigan and this place in 1862. He was born in Madison county, N. Y., and was one of the few remaining veterans of the war of 1812. Rev. Mr. Glover preached the funeral discourse, the services being held at the house Thursday a.m., and the body of the aged patriot was laid in Riverside, by the side of her who had shared a long life of joy and sorrow with him. ---

Evelyn W. Collar - 1964 - The ashes of Mrs. Evelyn W. Collar, 83 of Tucson, Arizona will be interred at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Prospect Hill cemetery. Mrs. Collar died Jan 6th in Tucson. She was the mother of Mrs. John (Mary Katherine Collar) Stockdale. (webmaster note: Evelyn died January 6th, 1964 - per the Tucson Daily Citizen. )

Connor, Almira Mrs. = Cassopolis Vigilant, Feb 20. 1930 - Mrs. Almira Conner, daughter of Josiah and Lydia Kinneson, was born in Edwarsburg, Sept 28., 1840. She passed away Friday, Feb 14, 1930 at a three day illness of pneumonia. Her father was keeper of the first county house in Cass county. It was there where she was born and at the age of three years they moved to Howard township, where she has lived on two adjoining farms the remainder of her life. She was married to Henry Connor, who preceded her in death 28 years ago.
   Those left to mourn her loss are Mrs. Ro. O. Cook, her daughter-in-law, one grandson, Monte Cook, and one great grandaughter, Irene Cook.
   Funeral services were held from the late home on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. os. I. Lindsay of United Church officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery north of Dailey. - contributed by: Brett Hardesty.
