GRANT -- WITHEY. March 7, 1910 Frances E. GRANT of Cheboygan, Michigan testified she had known a Joseph S. WITHEY since infancy. Joseph S. WITHEY was born ca 1841, probably in Ontario. I hope that by learning where Frances E. GRANT (nee NICHOLS) was ca 1841 I can pinpoint the birthplace of Joseph WITHEY. If anyone has information on either of these two people, please contact me at barbsnow@umich.edu

Information wanted on families and father of brothers Lewis JEWELL (b.1844 - Ontario, d. 1925 - Cheboygan; wife Harriet; children Rachel, Francis, Edmond, Alfred, Lorenzo, Walter, Richard Herman) and Nelson JEWELL (b. 1842 - Ontario, d.? - alive in 1925; wife Mary Anne, children Willis, William, Selilia and Ernest (possibly more). Moved to Cheboygan 1880-1881 from North Gwillimbury, York County, Ontario, Canada. Did their father William JEWEL(L) (b. 1812 - Ontario) move with them? Did any of the JEWELL families in Cheboygan (1850+) originally come from Duchess County New York state (1760-1820)? We have a lot of information on Lewis' and Nelson's 9 siblings who stayed in Canada and would love to exchange info.

I am researching any information relating to my father (William Emery BULLIS - RENTSCHLER). My father was born in Mullet Township, Cheboygan, MI on June 19, 1947 to Ardeth DERBY, born March 28, 1929 in Mullet Twp and Thomas or William Thomas BULLIS, birth information unknown. Ardeth and Thomas were believed to be married at the 1st Congregational Church in Cheboygan, MI. Ardeth DERBY-BULLIS then married Ernest RENTSCHLER on September 2, 1950. Ernest RENTSCHLER adopted my father soon thereafter. I am seeking any information regarding Thomas or William Thomas BULLIS. I am also searching for any information on my grandmother's (Ardeth DERBY) father. Ardeth DERBY was born to Emery Donald DERBY and Viola May Layman in Mullet Twp in 1929. There is virtually no known information on Emery Donald DERBY'S father. Emery Donald DERBY was born November 16, 1899 in Cheboygan, Michigan to (Addie STOKES-DERBY- HATCH) and possibly Daniel DERBY although I am not sure about his first name. Addie was born Addie STOKES and then married and became Addie DERBY. Supposedly, Daniel DERBY died in the early 1900's. Addie then married a man by the name of Howard HATCH. Any information on DERBY and BULLIS is appreciated.

My g-grandfather was Joseph ROSE. According to the 1900 US Census he was born in the English part of Canada (around 1860's) and came to the US in 1883 (or 1884). He married Rosa ST. ELOI, who was also born in Canada in 1869 (?). Joseph ROSE homesteaded a farm in Cheboygan County which is now on Rose Road (or Rose Street). In the Michigan Census of 1840, there was an Elias ROSE in Michilimackinaw County (Territory?). I don't know if he is any relation to Joseph. Joseph and Rosa had nine children: George, Sheridan, Alexander, Violet, Vene, Sherman (I can't remember the other three). I want to know if Alexander ST. ELOI is any relation to Rose [St. Eloi] Rose. He was also listed in the 1900 US Census. He came from Canada in 1883 (or 1884). The Census information given on Alexander is that he was born in Fr. Canada and that his mother was from New York and his father was from France. My g-grandmother, Rose [ST. ELOI] ROSE was half Ojibway and half Fr. Canadian. I would like to find out the Native American history. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

My maternal lines are from Cheboygan. I have 3000 names in my ancestral tree so far. My grandparents were both 1st generation one family from Belgium the other Quebec. Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Van Slembrouck had a farm on Rocheleau Rd. (no longer named that) in Aloha Twp. My grandfather was one of the first school commissioners of Aloha Twp. Our family remains connected to Cheboygan as we have several family cottages at Aloha. I would very much like to share my gedcom file with anyone that is interested. I have traced the French Canadian lines back to initial settlers of Canada and the Belgian side in the 1700's. My great-grandparents who immigrated where David Rocheleau and Emelia Coutu/Edmond Van Slembrouck and Maria Kelderman. Sincerely Jayne A. Hebert

I have "Widow's Pension Papers" for Antoine Doner, my g-grandfather, who was in the Civil War. According to these papers, He was married to a Jennie TAYTOR on June 21, 1884. A daughter, Jennie DONER was born August 20, 1884.(yes, those dates are correct =}). I know Antoine had been married previously, as my grandmother Rose Lucy DONER was born 1874, and a sister, Dottie in abt. 1880. I am very interested in learning anything about this Jennie TAYLOR, Jennie DONER, or any of the above mentioned--also need to know name of 1st wife. Antoine was born 1835 Cheboygan, and died Jan 6, 1895 in Cheboygan. Parents were Antoine Doner/Harriet Griffith. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much-Judy King

25 Sep 1998 - I recently obtained the Certificate of Marriage of Dot J. E. DONNER of Mullet Lake, to T. C. WILBER of Indian River. The marriage took place in Cheboygan, Cheboygan Co. MI, January 9, 1902. T. C. Wilber was b. abt. 1876; Dot was b. about 1884/5. T. C.'s parents were E. O. WILBER and Emma KETLER. Dot J. E.'s parents: Antoine DONNER/Jennie Taylor I am now convinced that this "Dot J. E." (or "Dottie" as she's referred to in a newspaper article about the marriage) is the same person as a Jennie DONER that I recently queried about, and who was mentioned in the Civil War Widow's Pension Papers and whose birthdate was given there as August 20, 1884. ANY information about any of the above persons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Judy King

28 Dec 1998 - Seeking name of wife and children of Antoine DONAIS/DONER/DONNER/DOANER. He is listed in the 1870 Census microfilm for Mackinaw County under DONAIS,Antoine, (I've also seen Antoino, & Anthony) but the writing is extremely difficult to read. This is what I was able to extract: The listing is in Holmes Twp. p. 261 (second sheet of 261)--or p. 8, depending on the form--dwelling #53; family #54: DONAIS, Antoine; age 34; M; W; Fisherman; born MI; Father of Foreign Birth; 1 Male Citizen of 21 yrs and upwards in household. Others listed Ma---- (couldn't read); 35; F; W; Keeping House Henrietta/ Hannah/H?: 14; F; W; At Home Cecile: 13; F; W; Attending School A? (Antoine/Arbrand/???) 10; M; W; Attending School Zoi??: 6?; F; W; Alfred?: 5; M As you can see--there are many ? and blanks--and it's information I really need badly--like the name of Antoine's wife. SOO---- can ANYONE tell me--if there's a printed copy of this census on file somewhere? Or would anyone have access to a better copy of it? I would be so grateful if someone could help me fill in the blanks. Antoine later moved to Cheboygan, and died there in 1895. I'm assuming there would be several decendants from these 5 children and others born later. Thanks so much for any help.

KEZAR, DE FRAINE - Henry Haild Kezar is my great-grandfather and Melinda De Fraine my great-grandmother on my mother's side of the family (Kezar>Sykora). Henry's father Alvin Kezar brought the family to Cheboygan (Duncan City) in mid 1800s. Henry and Melinda raised their family in Cheboygan through the 1920s. The one son Alvin, died with no children. The five girls, Gertrude, Bertha, Edith, Mable and Berenice became, respectively ZEDAR, KAUFMAN, GOODMAN, CAMPBELL and SYKORA. So I doubt there are any KEZARs in Cheboygan today (that would be directly related). I am most interested in learning about my great-great-grandfather Alvin KEZAR, my great-grandfather Henry KEZAR, and Henry's son Alvin KEZAR. I am also interested in learning about by great-grandmothers family, the De Fraines. Paul R. Palmer, Jr. Springfield, VA.

Joseph TEBO/THIBEAU b. 1832 d.8/1895
We are attempting to identify the names of JOSEPH TEBO's four brothers and/or parents and from where in Canada the TEBO's immigrated and later to where they returned. What is currently known about JOSEPH and his brothers: JOSEPH was born in 1832. One record indicates he was born in St. Martin, Manitoba, Canada. He was one of 5 brothers each served in the U.S. Civil War. They came to Cheboygan, Michigan from Canada. JOSEPH went to Northern New York in the vicinity of Dickenson Center, New York where he found work in the timber industry. NY State, Franklin Co. 1875 Census lists JOSEPH as being 43 and Olive ALMEDIA his wife as 37. They had 8 children (Adelbert 1857, Edward 1858, Olve Wyman 1861, Joseph Jr. 1864, Rose (Wheeler) 1866, Victoria 1868, Willard Franklin 1872, Agnes 1875, and Carrie (Stoddard) 1876). We do not know when he went from Michigan to New York. There he married ALMEDIA JARVIS. When she died in 1838 he went back to Cheboygan area and married MARTHA JONES. A Cheboygan war widow on 2/6/1887. JOSEPH died in 1895 and is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery. One of his war papers indicate his "birth place" was St. Martin, Canada. Contact in that area indicate no French ever lived in St. Martin. He was wounded in his left leg at Moneary Bridge over a river by the same name in May, 1865. Some of the Tebos were illiterate as was JOSEPH. This they said was the reason the name went from THIBEAU to TEBO. Request by: Hollis Bliss, Lawrenceville, GA.

Miles Michael Gerard Vieau Sat. Nov.1, 1997
My name is Miles Vieau. My father is Manning Paul Peter Vieau Sr. We both live in Brighton, MI. My Grandfather was Alexander J. Vieau. He was born and raised in Cheboygan before moving to the Detroit area. His wife, my grandmother, was born in Indian River. Her maiden name was Carpenter. Her family owned the saw mill on the Cheboygan river. My great grandfather was Napoleon Vieau. He was married to an Indian named Ka-hon-ti. Her American name was Philomine La Forte Vieau. Later she was married to Napoleon's brother, Adolphus Viau, (not Vieau). Adolphus children spelled their last name Viau, Philomine's children (or Napoleon's Children) spelled their last name Vieau (not Viau). The merging of the two families of children were that of natural first cousins, which lived as brothers and sisters. Half of them spelled their names Viau, while the other half spelled their last name Vieau. The reason for the difference of spellings is said to be from census takers spelling phonetically. Just a little bit I know before my grandfather and great aunt Rose Vieau Lebarge died. My grandfather was born in 1900 or 1901. If you have any information I would appreciate. Thanks, Miles Michael Gerard Vieau.
