John and Jane Ashby are listed in the 1850 US Census in Gaines, Orleans County, 
New York, on roll M432-575.  John's age is listed as 39, born in England, a 
farmer with  real estate he owns valued at $400.  With him are his wife Jane,  
36, born England; children: Mary, 15, b. England; Eliza, 9, born NY; Lucy, 7, 
born NY; John, 6, b. NY; William, 4, born NY; and Emma, 1, born NY.  Next door 
to them live John Ashby,  60, laborer born England with real estate valued at 
$200 and his wife Sally, 55.

In the 1860 US Census I find the family in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, 
Michigan.  John Ashby, 49, born England, farmer; Jane, 46, born England; John, 
15, William, 13, Emma, 11, (John, William & Emma born in NY) and another child, 
9, whose name I cannot read, born in Michigan.

General Notes (Wife)

Jane Harwood Ashby Wadd is shown in the 1870 Barry County, Michigan census 
living with her 2nd husband, James Wadd.  Her age is 55, born in England.  
Thomas Wadd, 15, lives with them.

In the 1870 US Census, sons John and William are living in Hope, Barry County 
Michigan, with their sister Lucy and her husband Ansel Kingsbury.  A few houses 
away live James, Jane and Thomas Wadd.

The 1880 Census for Hope, Barry, Michigan shows Jane Wadd, 66, born England, a 
widow.  Both her parents were born in England.

In Jane Ashby Wadd's probate file the following people are named.  I do not 
know which of Jane's children is the parent of the various grandchildren:

1) A grandson, Moses Strickland, Maple Grove, MI.  His age is not given.
2) A granddaughter,Lilly Wend (?) residence unknown
3) ? Evans, granddaughter, Battle Creek, MI
4) Charles Perry Strickland, grandson, Baltimore, MI
5) Eliza Sayles, daughter age 51, residence Freeport, Barry Co., MI.
6) John Ashby, son age 46, residence Township of Hope, Barry Co., MI.
7) William H. Ashby, son age 43, residence Hope, Barry Co., MI.
8) Jennie Searles, (daughter of Lucy Ashby Kingsbury) granddaughter age about 
31, residence Hickory Corners, Barry Co., MI.
9) Charles Kingsbury, grandson age about 28, residence Hope, Barry Co., MI.
10) Orville Kingsbury, grandson, age 22, residence Hope, Barry Co., MI.
11) Myrtie Kingsbury, grand daughter, age 18, residence Hope, Barry Co., MI.

In the probate file is a description of real estate owned by Jane Ashby Wadd:
"Five acres of land off of the South West Corner of the South East Fractional 
quarter of Section twenty in the township of Hope, County of Barry and state of 
Michigan, except all not heretofore deeded to Wm Ashby and C. K. & S. Rail 
Road. "

Jane Ashby Wadd's will:
"Know all men by these presents that I Jane Wadd of the township of Hope, 
county of Barry and state of Michigan being of mature age and sound mind at the 
time of making this instrument do, declare the same to be my last will and 
testament and hereby evoke all or any former wills made by me.
"First I desire that any real estate of which I may be possessed at the time of 
my death shall be sold and after defraying the expenses of my last illness and 
necessary funeral charges the remainder of the money from sale of said real 
estate shall be equally divided among my three children viz William, John and 
Eliza. I bequeath to my son William the following personal property, my large 
table, and oil cloth, my chequered feather bed and two pillows belonging 
thereto, three chairs, lounge (?) square black comfortable and red table 
cloth.
"To my son John I bequeath the following personal effects. One bolster and 
pillow and feather bed, my new beadstead [sic] and springs the tea chest in 
which I keep my papers two linnen [sic] table cloths.
"To my daughter, Eliza, I bequeath the following named property.  My bed room 
bereau [sic], flower pot quilt and comfortable, one yellow table cloth, and 
large cloths [sic] brush.
"I bequeath my wearing apparrel to my son John's wife, Sarah, and to my 
daughter Eliza.  I desire each of my grand children to have a keepsake such as 
a picture or some other small article and I hereby appoint my son John as my 
executor of this my last will and testament.
Dated this thirty-first day of August AD 1891.
Signed and sealed Jane Wadd, in presence of L. H. Barnes and Myrtie Kingsbury."
