Battle Creek Newspaper article 1932:
John G Dowd fought in three of the most important battles of the Civil War and
was wounded in one of them, but the real high light of his wartime reminiscences
was the story of the white house birthday dinner in which he was Lincoln's
guest.
The regiment in which Mr. Dowd was a private was stationed in Washington at the
time. President Lincoln learned that February was the outstanding month for
birthdays among that regiment and he invited all of its soldiers whose birthdays
fell in February to dinner at the white house. Mr. Dowd remembers the dinner,
but he can not recall how many guests were invited.
The dinner was February 12, on the president's birthday. Mr. Dowd's birthday is
February 19.
Mr. Dowd was in service during most of the Civil war. He enlisted from
Prairieville in Barry county. After he was wounded in the Battle of James Island
he was retired from service but later he re enlisted, served for a time as a
team driver and later became a camp cook for the duration of the war. He also
fought in the battles of Antietam and South Mountain.
At the time of his enlistment, Mr. Dowd was 19. All of the other boys of
fighting age also enlisted from the Prairieville school during the early days of
the war. Most of them were in the same regiment, the first brigade of the first
division of the ninth army corps, Company F of the eighth Michigan Infantry.
Mr. Dowd makes his home with his son George Dowd of 250 Graves Avenue. His other
children are Victor of Kalamazoo, Elmer of Kalamazoo, Ernest of Galesburg, Mrs
Alice Dickinson and Mrs. Edith Campbell of California, and Mrs. Helen McDonald
of Richland

John G Dowd, Civil War veteran and a resident of Battle Creek for the last 19
years, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Sunday at the home of his son, George H Dowd,
250 Graves avenue, after a lingering illness.
A native of Michigan, Mr. Dowd was born February 19, 1837, in Prairieville,
Barry county and had spent all of his life in or near this city. Following his
war service, he engaged in farming and spent most of his life on his farm near
Hickory Corners.
Besides the son at whose home he died Mr. Dowd leaves three other sons, Victor
Dowd, of Kalamazoo, Elmer Dowd, of Ross township, and Ernest Dowd of Comstock;
three daughters, Edith and Mrs. Belle Nickelsen. residing in California, and
Mrs. Hugh Mcdonald, of Yorkville;a brother, Mark Dowd, residing in Missouri; and
nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Hebble's
Chapel with the Rev Carleton Brooks Miller, pastor of the First Congregational
church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Hickory Corners cemetery.
