From the first tax roll in 1838, taken of Climax Twp., Kalamazoo Co., MI: Holland owned 160 acres of land valued at $480; owned 2 oxen valued at $75; 2 cows valued at $50; 5 two-year-olds valued at $50; total value, $655; tax, $3.54. Holland was township treasurer from 1845-46. (The History of Kalamazoo County cited above claims Holland and Mehitable only had six children. However, there were five children still living with them in 1850, while the firstborn lived next door with husband Seth W. SIMMONS, and daughter Mary living elsewhere with husband Charles H. KEYES. When the History lists the children, it calls Ellis, a male, “Alice,” and leaves out Pierson, a male, altogether, indicating both may have died young.) |
