James P. Ferguson was the seventh child of Jeremiah George Fergusonand his wife, Sarah Jane Olmstead. 
He was born April 20, 1845 in Waterloo, Seneca County, New York. 
He was a farmer at age 16 in Tyre.

James enlisted February 12 1864, at age of 16, in Company D, 3rdNew York Light Artillery. 
At the Battle of Kingston in April 1864, he lost his left eye whena cannister shell burst. 
He had measles at the Newbern, North Carolina hospital. 
In August, he was captured at Newbern and held four months at Macon,Georgia. 
He was disharged at Syracuse, New York on July 5, 1864.

James married Adeline, daughter of David and Surviva Daly and DavidPepper May 29, 1868 in Rock County, Wisconsin. 
Surviva Ferguson was their only child.

James became a minister and lived at Vestaburg, Montcalm, Michiganin 1894. 
He was Chaplain of W. S. Miner Post No. 420, GAR.
