William Gill, Leaing Citizen and Prominent Merchant, Died Yesterday Afternoon

William Gill died at his home in Northport, yesterday afternoon, aged 78 years, of paralysis, after about two years of illness. For nearly half a century Mr. Gill had been a prominent, respected and prosperous resident of the Grand Traverse region. Born in England in 1823, he came to this country in 1842, and in 1855 he moved to Northport, which has been his home ever since. In 18?3 he engaged in the mercantile business and for a quarter of a century or more he was the leading merchant in Leelanu county, and the business is still conducted by his son, H. E. Gill. For more than twenty years Mr. Gill was postmaster at Northport, and besides holding numerous township offices, from time to time, he was county treasurer fourteen years. Close attention to business details combined with an unusual degree of business ability brought to Mr. Gill a handsome competence which enabled him to retire from active business some years ago. The winers were spent in Florida and the summers at his Northport home. For a long time his health had gradually been failing and death was not unexpected.

In Mr. Gill's daeth Northport loses a valued and beloved citizen, and all through the Grand Traverse region there are many old-time friends who will have pleasant memories of the early days when Mr. Gill was active in business, political and social affairs.

The deceased leaves a wife and two sons, and one daughter, H. E. and Jonnie of Northport and Wilbur of Beaver Island. Jonnie has been summoned from Florida, where she is spending the winter.

Ralph Anderson drove to Northport this morning to embalm the body and make arrangements for the funeral, which will perhaps be Sunday, on the arrival of Mr. and MIss Gill, as they cannot get here much before Saturday.

Giroux, Dan W.

NORTHPORT — Dan "Can Do" Giroux, 63, of Northport, Mich., passed away on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, Mich.

Dan was born on Feb. 15, 1949, in Pontiac, Mich., the son of William and Gladys (Boice) Giroux. On Aug. 25, 1989, in Waterford, Mich., he married Linda Cosellin-Dargis, who survives.

Dan graduated from Waterford/Kettering High School in 1967, attended Adrian College on a baseball scholarship and played for the St. Louis Cardinals Farm Team in the late 1960s. After returning home, he joined First Federal Savings and Loan in Pontiac, Mich., and was quickly promoted to a position in the Mortgage Department.

Dan and his wife Linda moved to Northport in 1996 and with his vast knowledge of banking and mortgage experience, pioneered the sub-prime mortgage market in northern Michigan. His entertaining and "larger-than-life" personality was welcomed by everyone and easily recognized in his catchy radio and TV commercials.

Dan loved sports and was an avid fisherman, traveling to Canada and parts of the U.S. with many friends for new fishing adventures and "stories." In 1995, he helped coach the Suttons Bay High School Baseball Team to a Division Title.

Dan was known by his family as "Big Bears" and "Grandpa Dan," while others knew him as "Can Do." His spirit and memory will always be known in every life he touched, and remembered forever.

In addition to his loving wife of 23 years, Dan is survived by his children, Michael Dargis, Melissa Dargis, and Jason (Laura) Dargis; and three grandchildren, Adrian, Jake, and Dylan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay, Mich. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Northport, Mich., with a visitation held one hour prior. Burial will be at Leelanau Township Cemetery in the spring. Rev. Tom Otis will officiate.

HONOR - Carrie Lynn Gonyon, 29, of Honor, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Born June 12, 1970, in Port Huron, she was the daughter of Charles and Cherith (Drugich) Apsey. On April 23, 1994, at Eden Bible Church in Beulah, she married Timothy A. Gonyon.

Carrie was a community living assistant at an adult foster care home. She provided special care to her patients by providing them a family by taking them into her own home during holidays. She always had time to attend to and mend those who were wounded.

She is survived by her husband, Tim; two sons, Taylor and Timmy; mother, Cherith Pitts of Lapeer; father, Charles (Raeann) Apsey of Port Huron; brothers, Jim, Chuck, Irvin and Jared Apsey; sisters, Angela and Sara; and grandparents, Charles and Betty Apsey and Dollie and Lyle Drugich. She is also survived by a very special aunt and uncle.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Eden Bible Church with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Larry L. Gray
Died December 9, 1999
WILLIAMSBURG - Larry L. Gray, 55, of Williamsburg and formerly of Ft. Meyers, Fla., died Thursday morning at the home of his aunt Mary Lautner.

Larry was born on July 24, 1944, in Dundee, and soon after was adopted by Garl and Claribel (Boerner) Gray. He had been a summer resident to the Grand Traverse and Benzie areas, and became a permanent resident in 1994.

Larry attended the Flint School for the Deaf until his 18th birthday. He was a very caring and loving person, who especially loved children and animals. He read his bible faithfully and shared his knowledge with others. He was an excellent signor, which helped him in his many travels.

Larry is survived by his aunts and uncles, Mary (Merlin) Lautner and Alice Gates of Williamsburg, Helen Gray and Zane (Virginia) Gray of Interlochen, Bryce (Darlene) Gray of Honor, Pauline Boerner of Grand Rapids; many, many cousins; and a very special friend, Greg Dobbs in Ft. Myers.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Floyd McCrimmon officiating. Entombment and committal services will be held at Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens.

Larry's family has asked that his caring for children continues and suggests a memorial contribution to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Thelma M. Gray
Died December 19, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Thelma M. Gray was born May 31, 1918, in Kingsley. She was the daughter of David J. Gray and Ada May (Pollock) Gray.

A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, she came to the David Netzorg family as an adult lifetime companion.

Our beloved Thelma M. Gray passed on unexpectedly Sunday and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Thelma was truly a "gentle beam of living love," always reaching out to everyone with a cheerful smile and a kind word; she lived a life of great service and devotion; constantly nurturing the young and the old alike. Our family was blessed by such an angel.

We will all gather for a service in celebration of her precious life this coming summer. A notice of the exact time and place will be posted in the Record-Eagle at a later date.

May you be comforted by the fact that the life Thelma lived lives on with all of us. Survivors include her first cousins, Marie (Allyn) Dean of Summit City, Alta McConnell of Beulah and Irene Brooks of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and many second cousins including Leslie and Shirley Bowman of Traverse City.
