Albert Wolfram, 87,
died Thursday evening at his farm home near Pigeon following an
illness of three months.
Born December 24,
1868, in Germany, he came to Huron county in 1890. He and Matilda
Jaster were married at Sebewaing in 1895. She died in 1945.
Surviving are three
daughters, Mrs. Mary Vollmer, of Owendale, Mrs. Clara Bernard, of
Detroit, and Mrs. Martha Eisengruber, of Unionville; four sons,
Frank, of Detroit, and Martin, Albert, Jr. and Joseph, all of
Pigeon; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were
held Monday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Francis Borgia church. The
Rev. Bernard Kirchman officiated, and burial was in the church
cemetery. Rosary devotions were held Sunday evening at 8 o'clock at
the family residence.
Mrs. Albert Wolfram, 73, died at
her home four and a half mile south of Pigeon at 8:30 Monday evening,
following an illness of 6 months.
Mitilda Gertrude Jaster was born in
West Prussia, Germany, on June 24, 1871 [should be 1870]. When 18
years of age, she came to this country and for six years lived in Bay
City. On Nov. 17, 1897 she was united in marriage to Albert
Wolfram. Immediately after their marriage they settled on the farm
where she lived the balance of her life.
Besides a husband she leaves three
daughters, Mrs. David Vollmer, of Pigeon, Clara of Detroit, and Martha
of Unionville; four sons, Martin and Frank of Detroit, and Albert, Jr.
and Joseph at home; one brother, John Jaster of Bay Port and one sister,
Mrs. Elizabeth Krauss of Bay City; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral services will be
conducted by Rev. Fr. Hafner in St. Francis Catholic church this morning
(Friday) at 10:00 a.m. Burial willl be in the church cemetery.

Township’s Oldest Citizen Passes Away
John
Begalka, 96, died at his home four and one-half miles west of Pigeon
at 2 o’clock in the morning Wednesday. He had been ailing for a year. Mr. Begalka was born in
West Prussia on Jun 30, 1846. Fifty-seven years ago he came to this county
and settled in Fair Haven township. Fifty years ago he moved onto the farm
where he spent the balance of his life. On January 8, 1871 he was united
in marriage in Germany with Elizabeth Jaster who preceded him in death
sixteen years ago.He is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Mary Buerker of Pigeon and Martha at home; two sons,
Martin and Albert at home; four grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.The funeral services will
be held in St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church at 9:30 today (Friday).
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Albert John Begalka, age
86, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 29, at the Scheurer Hospital,
Pigeon.He was born June 23,
1879, in Germany and came to Huron county at the age of six with his
parents, the late John and Elizabeth Begalka. Mr. Begalka was a member
of the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. He is survived by two
sisters, Miss Martha Begalka and Mrs. Mary Buerker, both of Pigeon, one
brother, Martin, of Pigeon, and four nephews. Funeral services were
held Friday, July 2, at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Francis Borgia Catholic
Church, Pigeon. The Rev. Fr. Glenn Wm. Cronkite officiated and burial was
in the church cemetery.

BUERKER

Roy Buerker, age 53,
passed away Tuesday, June 4, at the Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon.
He was born June 19,
1914, in Tuscola County. He was with the Huron County Sheriff’s
Department from 1948 to 1958 and for the past 10 years he was with the
State of Michigan License Bureau. He is a veteran of World War II, a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the St. Francis
Borgia Catholic Church at Pigeon.
He is survived by his
mother, Mrs. Mary Buerker of Pigeon and three brothers, Arthur of
Sebewaing, Gilbert and Alvin, both of Pigeon.
Funeral services will be
held Thursday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Francis Borgia Catholic
Church. The Rev. Fr. Glenn Wm. Cronkite will officiate. Burial will be in
the church cemetery with gravesite military rites by Tip of the Thumb VFW
Post, Pigeon.

Martin
A. Begalka, 98, of Pigeon passed away Tuesday, July 10 at Scheurer
Hospital, Pigeon.
He was born December 7,
1874 in Germany. He came to Sebewaing from Germany at the age of nine. He
moved near Kilmanagh and lived there three years. Then moved near Bay Port
and lived on the John Begalka Homestead until 1964, when he moved to
Pigeon and lived with his sister, Martha.
Mr. Begalka is survived
by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Buerker, and Miss Martha Begalka, both of
Pigeon.
Funeral services were
held Thursday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis Borgia Catholic
Church, Pigeon. The Rev. Fr. Glenn Wm. Cronkite officiated with burial in
the church cemetery.

Elvin Buerker, age 74, of Pigeon, passed away Saturday, March 13, at
his home.
He was born July 22, 1907
in Bay Port, son of Ignatius (Ned) and Mary (Begalka) Buerker.
He was a member of St.
Francis Borgia Catholic Church and its men’s club. He was a member of K
of C Council 1545, Bad Axe [a town near to Pigeon], and the Pigeon
Senior Citizens. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the
Navy as a Sea Bee, and was a member of Tip of the Thumb VFW Post
2236.
Mr. Buerker is survived
by his mother, Mary Buerker, Pigeon; one brother and sister-in-law, Arthur
& Katherine Buerker of Grand Rapids; an aunt, Miss Martha Begalka,
Pigeon; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Buerker of Bay City, and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ned, and two
brothers, Gilbert and Roy.
Funeral Mass was
conducted Tuesday, March 16 at 11 a.m. from the Shetler-Bussema Funeral
Home, Pigeon. Rev. Fr. Michael Wolf officiated, with burial in the Church
Cemetery.

Vera May Rettray, 88, of Troy passed away on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born May 26, 1912, in Bad Axe. She lived in Birmingham for 47 years. She was a homemaker, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham and a member of the Mature Minglers. She is survived by her daughters, Gayle Wolf and her husband, Wallace, Karen Davlin and her husband, Ronald, Linda Sallan and her husband, Robert, and Dr. and Mrs. John and Marian Cotant; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace; and a son, Robert Rettray. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Wm. R. Hamilton Co., Bell Chapel, 820 E. Maple, Birmingham. The Rev. Dr. Steven E. Schafer will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association of Michigan, Angela Hospice or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Muriel P. Shuart died Thursday morning at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shuart in Colfax, of grip pneumonia. She was 28 years old and for several months has been a saleslady in the Conaton Hat & Art shop. She was ill about a week. She leaves besides her parents five brothers and two sisters – Henry and James of Colfax; Chas. Of Spokane; George of Midland; Joseph in the army service; Mrs. William Johnson, of Filion; Mr. Mrs. Henry Kisner, of Iowa; Mrs. Geo. Keeley, of Dallas, Texas. Interment will be in Elkton Cemetery.

News has been received of the death of Kenneth Gerald Shuart, 21, Pontiac, formerly of Bad Axe.
Shuart, who had heart trouble as a child, was stricken by a heart attack while driving with his mother and grandmother on their way to Florida.
Kenneth was a graduate of Bad Axe high school and the Detroit Business Institute. He was formerly a Daily Tribune carrier when the family resided in Bad Axe and was employed with the Oakland county office at the time of his death.
He was born in Detroit and came to Bad Axe as a child with his parents. The family moved to Pontiac last year.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Gerald Shuart, Pontiac; two brothers, Thomas and William; and one sister, Peggy, all of Pontiac; paternal grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. James Shuart, Bad Axe; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jeanette Reinke, Pontiac.
Remains are in the Huntoon funeral home in Pontiac, where funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in White Chapel at Pontiac.

Kenneth Edwin Shuart, 36, prominent farmer living eight miles south of Bad Axe, died at his home Tuesday of typhoid fever after an illness of four weeks.
He was born in Kinde on November 6, 1908 and in 1937 he married Katherine McKinnon at Grosse Pointe.
Surviving besides his wife are his father and mother, Mr. And Mrs. James Shuart, Ubly; three sisters, Mrs. Glenn McIntyre, and Mrs. Richard Mills, both of Detroit, and Mrs. Gordon McAllister, St. Clair; three brothers, Richard and Graydon, both of Ubly, and Tech. Sgt. Gerald Shuart, Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
The body is now at the residence. Funeral services will be held from the MacAlpine Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. James Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.

Husbands of 2 Kalamazoo Women
Friends Killed Within Eight Days
Two Kalamazoo young women friends, who by comparing letters decided their husbands must be serving together, have become war widows as a result of the battle for Siapan Island. The young men entered service the same day, had basic training together, and went overseas at the same time.
Mrs. Barbara Shuart, 1137 Douglas Avenue, learned this week her husband, Pvt. Vernon Shuart, 22, had been killed in action July 8 on Siapan. Her message closely followed one received by Mrs. Virginia Carter Cowgill, 801 Hawley Street, who was told Pfc. Duray E. Cowgill was killed June 30 on the same island.
Pvt. Shuart was inducted in the army Feb. 23, 1943, and never received a furlough, going overseas the next May 8, after basic training at Camp Wolters, Tex. He shipped to Hawaii in an army engineer combat battalion, but after being hospitalized eight weeks in Honolulu for an injury, was transferred to the infantry.
The last letter received by his wife, the former Barbara Ballett, was dated May 31. The couple was married Aug. 22, 1942, and they have a daughter, Judith Ann, whom Pvt. Shuart had never seen, Mrs. Shuart works at the Fuller Manufacturing Company.
Born Jan. 27, 1822 [1922] in Kalkaska, Pvt. Shuart attended Crawford County schools and Roscommon high school. He was employed by the Checker Cam Manufacturing Corporation where Pfc. Cowgill also worked before entering service.
Surviving besides his wife and daughter are his father, George Shuart, 920 North Church Street, his mother Ervin Burmiester, 1624 Lake Street; three sisters, Ruth, Betty, and Barbara, and a half-brother, Charles Wesley Shuart, Whitmore, Mich., his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kinney, Republic, Mich.

Services Held For George Shuart
Funeral services for George Wesley Shuart, 77, were held on Sunday, March 1, at the Sorenson Funeral Home, with the Rev. R.C. Puffer officiating. Special music was furnished by Mrs. Arthur Feldhauser. Interment was in the family lot in Elkton Cemetery at Elkton, Michigan, on Monday at 1:30 in the afternoon, with relatives as pallbearers.
Mr. Shuart was born June 29, 1881, to Joseph and Avaline Shuart in Huron County, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Huron County, Michigan, as a child, and remained there until about thirty-eight years ago when he came to Crawford County. With the exception of some time spent with children in Flint, Tawas City and Richland, he remained in this community, making his home the past three years with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Confer. Mr. Shuart retired from his trade as painter and decorator about ten years ago.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Betty Konoski of Flint, Mrs. Ruth Smith or Richland, and Mrs. Ulalia Campbell of Port Huron, one son Charles W. of Tawas City, two brothers, James of Ubly and Joseph of Gladwin, a sister, Mrs. Margaret Keely of Washington, D.C., fifteen grandchildren as well as numerous nephews and nieces. One son Vernon L. was killed in WWII.
Note: “The usual errors exist. He lived in our cabin down the road from Bert Confer part of the time and part of the time with us. He was at Bert Confer’s when he died.” As stated per Vineta Rose “Ruth” (Shuart) Fritzler, June 2003.

James Philip Shuart, 36, of Bingham Township, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1996 at his farm, from injuries sustained in a farm accident.
He was born Aug. 20, 1959 in Bad Axe, the son of Clark and Venice (Gomoluch) Shuart.
He married Rhond L. (Tompkins) Tolbert on May 19, 1987 in Bad Axe.
Mr. Shuart was a Bingham Township farmer, and he and his wife had lived in Bingham Township near Ubly for the past five years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bad Axe, and a 1977 graduate of Bad Axe High School active in Future Farmers of America. He was employed at Thumb Tool and Engineering in Bad Axe for 10 years and enjoyed baseball, ice fishing and snowmobiling. He also continued his studies at Michigan State University.
Surviving are his wife, Rhonda; three daughters, Erica, Adrienne and Erin Tolbert, all at home.

Joseph Shuart, a prominent farmer of Colfax township, died at his home December 24th, after a long illness. Deceased was born in Township of East Flamber, County of Winterworth, Ontario, on Sept. 11, 1845. He moved form there to Hay Township, Huron County, Ont., and then to Euphimia, Lampton County, coming to Huron County, Michigan in April 1892. There was a family of eleven children, two of which are dead.
Those present at the funeral which took place at the house on Friday morning where: Hiram, James, Charles, Joseph. Mrs. William Johnson, Murial, and two brothers from Elkton. The services were conducted by Rev. Hubbell, M.E. from Elkton, assisted by Rev. W.H. Mitchell of Kinde. Burial was made at Elkton. |

Shuart, 82, Bad Axe, died
Thursday at the Hubbard hospital in Bad Axe Thursday after a brief
illness.
He was born in Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada,
March 7, 1883
and moved to Huron county with his parents at the age of nine. Mr.
Shuart farmed in the Bad Axe area until his retirement.
Miss Anna McGillivray and Mr. Shuart were married
November 16, 1904
in Bad Axe. Couple celebrated their sixty-first wedding
anniversary last month.
Survivors are his widow, two sons, Gerald, Pontiac, and
Richard, St. Clair Shores, three daughters, Mrs. Thelma McIntyre
of Warren, Mrs. Edwyna Beason, St. Clair Shores, and Mrs. Arzell
Mills, Southfield; 21 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; one
brother, Joseph Shuart, Harrison, Michigan; and one sister Mrs.
Margaret Keeley of California.
Remains are at the McAlpine funeral home, in Bad Axe, where
services will be
2 p.m.
Monday.
Rev. Homer Bassett, United Missionary church, Bad Axe, will
officiate and burial will be in Colfax township cemetery, near Bad
Axe.

Graydon Shaurt, 56, Bad Axe business man, died Friday evening at Henry Ford Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Meade township March 17, 1907, and was a lifelong resident of this area. He was the owner of the Golden Rule Dairy in Bad Axe.

Jim (Ace) Shuart, 60, of Bad Axe died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at University Medical Center, Ann Arbor, after a long illness.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1938, in Bad Axe, son of Naomi (Ewald) Shuart and the late Graydon.
Jim Shuart and Janie Eppenbrock were married Aug. 22, 1964 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ruth.
He was an area truck driver for 25 years and an employee of Thumb Tool and Engineering. He was a former Bad Axe fireman and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany.
Surviving are his wife, Janie; three sons, Mike Shuart of Bad Axe, Chri Shuart of Dallas, Texas, and Brian Shuart of Bad Axe; one daughter, Tracy Twarozynski and her husband Jim of Grand Ledge; two grandchildren, Jack and Katie Twarozynski; his mother Naomi Shuart of Bad Axe; one brother, Clark Shuart and his wife, Veniece, of Filion; and four sisters, Allene Walker and her husband, Bill, of Bad Axe, Pat Ortega and her husband, Art, of Port Austin, Jean Rochefort and her husband, Jack, of Bad Axe, and Janet Rotger and her husband, Joe, of Sandusky.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the H.W. Weitenberner Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Art Ortega and Fr. Don Eppenbrock will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the discretionary use of the family. |

Bruce Krohn, 70, lifelong Elkton-area farmer, died Sunday evening, Oct. 28, 2001, while under hospice care. He was born Sept. 10, 1931, in Oliver Township at the home of his parents, Louise (Ewald) Krohn and the late Roy Krohn. He was at the same house, now his home, when he died. In his senior year at Elkton High School in 1949, he received the Star Farmer Award in State FFA competition. From that point on, he knew that farming was the path to choose. He went on to Michigan State University to further his education in agriculture before returning to the family farm. On Nov. 1, 1958, he was united in marriage to Barbara J. McGeachy at the Elkton Evangelical United Brethren Church. They lived and farmed northeast of Elkton all their married life. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, Aim High Farm Bureau Group and past president of the Huron County Corn Growers Association. Next to his wife and family, farming was truly the love of his life, retiring once but coming back to it a short time later. Surviving are his wife, Barbara; his son, Curtis Krohn and his wife, Cindy, of Bad Axe; his daughter, Carolyn Price and her husband, Mark, of Canton; his grandchildren, Chris and his wife, Julie, Casey, Caitlin, Amanda, Kyle and Natalie; his mother, Louise Krohn of Elkton; two brothers, Ronald Krohn and his wife, Donna, and Kenneth Krohn, both of Elkton; and his sister, Marge Hall and her husband, Richard, of Cass City. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rodney Sanderson-Smith, interim pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Elkton. Visitation is 2 to 9 p.m. today at Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. | Roland G. Henne, 89, of Bay Port died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center Cooper in Saginaw following a five-year illness. He was born Aug. 22, 1912, in rural Bay Port, son of the late William Benjamin and Erma Christina (Beaver)
Henne. He was united in marriage to Ruth Regina Fahrner on Aug. 26, 1933, in
Kilmanagh. She preceded him in death on March 15, 1996. Roland was a 1934 graduate from Michigan State College in Lansing with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. For a period of time he was employed by General Motors and later Dow Chemical Co. During World War II, he was employed by the U.S. Army as a civilian engineer technician serving in Egypt and North Africa and had been based at the Suez Canal. He was employed at Active Industries in Elkton where he was plant manager for 30 years. He retired at age 75 in 1987 and continued working for another three years as a consultant. On May 15, 1990, he received an award from Active Industries for 40 years of continuous work. He was a member of Bay Port United Methodist Church and was the treasurer for 30 years. He served on the Bay Port Board of Education for many years and later was on the consolidation board in forming Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Schools. He was instrumental in selecting the Laker school colors of green and white and also the school song. He was an avid deer, pheasant and turkey hunter and loved hunting ducks on Saginaw Bay. He was also a naturalist by planting and pruning his fruit orchard as well as being active in reforestation. Surviving are one daughter, Karen Bromley and her husband, Joseph, of Grosse Pointe Shores; five grandchildren and spouses, Alicia Kubacki and her husband, Craig, of Bay City, Kevin Cubitt of Ann Arbor, Michelle Sarka and her husband, Shawn, of Elkton, Tami Hubbard of Lincoln, and Goeffrey Cubitt and his wife, Kate, of Evanston, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leatha Chamberlain and her husband, Bill, of Saginaw, and Grace McGillivray and her husband, Floyd, of Clio; two brothers, Glen Henne and his wife, Audrey, of Bay Port, and Kenneth Henne of Frankenmuth; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant son; an infant brother, Gilbert
Henne; and four sisters, Helma McCaskey, Delores Lukasiak, Leatta Lupp and Lorraine Kohl. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in
Sebewaing. The Rev. Alger Lewis will officiate with burial in the New Bay Port Cemetery. Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and from noon until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Bay Port United Methodist Church, Stem Cell Research or the Methodist Seminary Scholarship Fund. |

Caro Graduate Killed Sunday in Caseville Mishap
Funeral services for Donald Guisbert, 19, former Caro resident, were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Guisbert, in Caseville, and at the Hayes Methodist Church in Caseville.
Young Guisbert was killed in an auto crash Sunday afternoon near Caseville in which two Pigeon youths were also badly injured.
He graduated from Caro high school in 1937 and he leaves a brother, Gerald, and two sisters, Shirley and Jane, in addition to his parents.

He was a painter and decorator and formerly worked at the Nelson Cement Products Co. Wm. R. McGillivray, aged 79 years and 9 months, died last Thursday. He did not appear to have any defined disease, but simply reached the end of his natural time. He was buried on Sunday in the Oliver Cemetery, services being held in the Presbyterian church, Rev. Eugene Sutphen officiating. |

Bad Axe, April 26 – Edwin Alexander McGillivray, 82, former resident of Huron County, died Thursday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Durkee, in Detroit.
The remains were removed Thursday to the Alden A. McAlpine funeral home here, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rev. R.D. Dean, Mennonite pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.
Mr. McGillivray is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth McGillivray, three sons, Archie McGillivray, Bad Axe, Charles McGillivray, Flint, and Russell McGillivray, Detroit, four daughters, Mrs. Peter McIntyre, and Mrs. Durkee, both of Detroit, Mrs. James Shuart, Ubly, and Mrs. William Wangler, West Branch, Mich: 39 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren: a brother: William McGillivray, Fostoria, Mich., and a sister Mrs. Eugene Newberry, West Branch.
Mr. McGillivray was boorn Aug 12, 1857 in Simcoe, Ontario. He was married 57 years ago in Ontario. He lived in many years in Huron County before moving to Detroit 16 years ago. |

Mrs. Sanford Keillor
Lily Mae Smith was born, March 11, 1876, in Chatham, Ont., and departed this life May 25, 1931. On March 4, 1896 she was united in marriage to Sanford Keillor. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Culliver Morrell, Elkton; Matthew of Detroit; James of Bad Axe; Lulu, Clayton and Clare at home. Besides her husband and children she is survived by four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Robert Jarvis, Owendale; Mrs. Roy Sorenson of Detroit, two brothers, Peter Smith of Montana and Archie of Detroit.
A host of other relatives and friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. |

PIONEER KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
CHARLES HOGAN OF KINDE MET INSTANT DEATH ON CHRISTMAS AS CAR OVERTURNED IN
DITCH
Charles Hogan, 88, a Huron county pioneer and Civil war veteran was almost instantly killed in an auto accident last Saturday, Christmas morning, about three miles east of Filion. Mr. Hogan with his son Francis and wife, with whom he lived at Kinde, were on their way to spend Christmas with a daughter and sister, Mrs. Roy Henderson of Harbor Beach.
From the icy road the car skidded into a deep ditch and overturned. It is thought that the aged pioneer, though in apparent good health died from the shock of the the accident. It was not apparent that he was physically injured. The son Francis was considerably bruised but not seriously.
Charles Hogan was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1835. He served through the American Civil War as a member of 5th Michigan Artillery. About 40 years ago he located on the farm near Kinde which has since been his home.
Deceased leaves three children; The son Francis of Kinde, Mrs. John McDonald of Port Austin and Mrs. Roy Henderson of Harbor Beach. Dr. A. W. Hogan of Bad Axe is a nephew.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Kinde on Monday with burial in Colfax Cemetery in Bad Axe.

Edwin Watkins died at the
Tripp Hospital Friday evening of catarrh of the bowels. The deceased
was born in Princeton, Oxford County, Ontario, March 23rd 1845, came to
Michigan in 1873 and put up either the third or fourth house in the
village for a shoe shop. He was united in marriage to Mary Braden
June 1875 daughter of Richard Braden now of this vicinity and a pioneer of
Verona township. This companion of his youth died in 1891 leaving a
babe less than a year old and five other small children all now having
reached manhood and womanhood or approaching that age, Mable the youngest
being in her fifteenth year, Ann the eldest teaches in Kansas but was home
with her father in his last sickness. Frederick is in Alberta in the
Canadian Northwest, Alfred, Russell and Elmer were with their father.
Edwin Watkins began life as a shoe maker but later became an engineer and
worked at that trade until he came to this place when he returned to his
former occupation. He was a respected citizen of this place filled
the office of justice of the peace for 22 years, was a member of the
school board for a number of years, was village president for two terms
and filled many offices in the local lodges of the independent order of
Odd fellows and the L.O.L. association of which orders he was among the
charter members. He had been in poor health for a great many years
but the sickness final breaking down came about three months ago when he
underwent an operation for a tumor which proved to be only a lesser
ailment. The end came very peacefully as the shadows of the evening
thickened. The funeral occurred
Sunday at two o'clock from the Episcopal church of which he had been a
life
long member. Rev. Robinson officiating and the remains were laid to
rest in
the Colfax cemetery in the presence of a large assembly who paid a last
tribute to the memory of an esteemed citizen and a good man.
