Rolfe Cemetery, Lowell Township
9790 E. Fulton Street
Lowell, Michigan

Lowell Ledger, 26 Mar 1931 - First Burial in Roth Cemetery in 1845 - Supervisor Yeiter and Clerk Bergin report "the correct name for the cemetery is "Rolfe".  It is sometimes called the Simpson Cemetery, but Rolfe is the original name, the ground for the cemetery being a part of the Rolfe farm, the original owners.  The first burials there are said to have been two Smith children interned in 1845 and 1846."  It has also been called the Roth-Coons Cemetery but the reasons are unknown.
From tax records the correct name is Rolfe Cemetery.  Why the different names that this cemetery was called?  The first burials by undertakers was done by O. J. Yeiter until the 1920's, then W. A. Roth in the 1920's.  Roth may have had a partner named Coons, after that it became Roth-Gerst.  The first next change was when a baby girl named West was buried in Simpson Cemetery.  The Simpson family bought the property that borders two sides of the cemetery from the Rolf family after Ransom Rolf's death in 1891.  The third cemetery border was to the east and property was owned by Cora Townsend Vermeer, the granddaughter of Samuel P. Rolf.  There was also another name for this cemetery, Mathews.  Harry Mathews married Sarah Simpson and their son and family now own what borders two side of the cemetery, but the east border still belongs to the descendants of Samuel Rolf.  Until 1980, when the State of Michigan stepped in and made the counties and townships responsible for the cemeteries, families like ours took care of them for more than a hundred years.
