TO THE MERCHANTS WHO HAVE MADE THIS ANNUAL POSSIBLE

The Pastor, together with the members of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, wish to express their gratitude to the merchants who have made this annual possible. Without the assistance of the people who have placed their advertisements in this booklet, we would not have the pleasure which we hope will be derived from reading the same.

We hope that the members and friends of the Church will make it a special point to patronize the various places of business herein represented, showing toward them the same fine spirit of coridality which they have shown toward the Church.

Thus may this booklet be of mutual benefit to all.

PASTOR’S REMARKS

There is much of value in a little booklet of this kind in that it helps the work of the Church in many ways. It gives us an idea of who the members of the Church are, and it should help us to get better acquainted with one another. It should prove helpful to us for reference purposes. It is very easy to become confused as to when the various groups of the Church meet. Here we have it at a moment’s notice. It also gives us a better conception of the scope of the Church’s activities. We sometimes get the idea that all there is to a Church are the services conducted on Sundays; but a reference to the calendar shows that to be far from the case. It also helps us to see wherein we lack, by the omission of activities which should be in every Church’s program.

Above all things else it reveals the need of workers. The program of a Church can be carried on just in proportion as there are the men and women who are willing to give of their time and strength to that work. There is a place for every person in the work of the Church. Each can contribute something of specific value to the work as a whole. The talents will be diversified, but in the blending of diversity there is produced the sweetest harmony.

When each keeps in mind the goal of our high calling of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, and is ready to make the necessary sacrifices for the attainment of that goal, the Church becomes a mighty factor in the extension of the Kingdom of God among men.

Sincerely yours,

WARD K. KLOPP.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SKETCH

IMMANUEL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH was fully organized as a Church September 11, 1889, with Rev. George Reynolds as Pastor, who had begun his work in July of that year. The three years previous had been pioneer days of meeting in the "little old schoolhouse" on the adjoining lot to the present site of the Church, having eight pupils in attendance that first Sunday, and at date of organization, twenty-three adults, who gladly took upon themselves the responsibility of organizing into Immanuel Presbyterian Church as a Mission of Westminster.

Two Westminster friends were outstanding in those days. They were Mr. W. O. Hughart and Amos S. Musselman, who were generous from lighting the fires on cold winter Sundays to carrying the financial burden of a fully equipped Church with a struggling membership.

Progress was gradual but continuous. Especially was this the case during the pastorate of Rev. James Thompson, from 1893 to 1897. He was an outstanding evangelistic preacher. During the following pastorate, of Rev. George Bryant, Immanuel had the honor of building the first Presbyterian Manse in the city, which still serves today.

The longest pastorate was that of Rev. W. J. Rainey, a kindly, fatherly man, who endeared himself to the growing community of the factory section of the city in that part. The next longest pastorate was that of Rev. Harvey E. Kilmer, who took up the work in 1917 and carried it on for seven years, to July, 1924.

The present Pastor took up the work in November, 1924. The total number added to the Church’s rolls during all the pastorates is 899, the present membership numbering 340.
