At a regular fellowship meeting of the Vergennes Christian Church held Feb. 22nd 1879 the Pastor of the Church, E. Mudge was instructed to procure a Suitable church book and preface the Same by a carefully prepared history of the Said church from the time of its first organization, Jan. 24th, 1843 to date. In accordance with Such instruction we hereby Submit the following

Historical Sketch

The Vergennes Christian Church owes its first organization to the labors of Eld. Newcomb Godfrey who made a profession of religion and entered upon the work of the Christian Ministry in the province of Upper Canada, about the year 1825. He removed from Canada to Northern Indiana in 1838 and in the Spring of 1839 He migrated from Indiana and settled in Vergennes Kent Co. Mich. The township had been first organized in the year previous and the entire region was an uncultivated wilderness. Soon after his Settlement He commenced preaching in private houses as opportunity offered. In the fall of 1839 a small log School house was built on a site nearly where the church now Stands. Here Eld. Godfrey established regular Semi monthly appointments and continued until the winter of 1842-3 when Serial meetings were held with signal results. Quite a number of the pioneer settlers devoted themselves to a Christian life and on the 14th day of Jan. 1843 the Vergennes Christian Church was constituted. All who accepted the name of Christian as the only name and the New Testament Scriptures as the only creed, and were willing to make Christian Character the only test of fellowship having themselves the evidence of Divine acceptance were invited to join the organization. There were some present who expressed the opinion that a church could not prosper organized upon so broad a basis assuming the necessity of a formulated Creed aside from the bible. Not withstanding this opposition. Eleven persons joined Eld. Godfrey in organizing the church. The following is a list of the original members viz.:

Eld. Newcomb Godfrey Hannah Godfrey
Elijah Godfrey Emeline Mudge
Franklin Keeney Lucinda Godfrey
Henry Aldrich Clista Keeney
Peter Aldrich Nancy Godfrey
Smith D. Godfrey Lucy Ford

On the date of organization Eld. N. Godfrey chosen pastor and Franklin Keeney church clerk. Others soon united and before the close of the year 1843 the church numbered twenty eight members. A few weeks Subsequent to the organization Bro. Newcomb Godfrey, Jr. was chosen deacon. In the winter of 1844-5 the School house was burned to the ground and during the following Summer meetings were held at the house & barn of Eld. Godfrey. In the fall of 1845 a small frame School house was completed, know through its whole history as the red school house and was occupied for the regular Services of the church until the present Church house was completed. In the fall of 1846 Eld. Godfrey visited a conference near Jackson he went on horse back and was compelled to ford rivers and from exposure he took a severe cold which resulted in inflammatory rheumatism, deforming his body, interrupting his labors and finally Shortening his life. When Eld. Godfrey was unable to preach regular service were kept up by Eld. Levi White, Eld. F.J. Whitfield and others. In the year 1846 Walter White removed from Canada into the neighborhood and united with the church and Soon after was chosen deacon in place of Newcomb Godfrey who had resigned. In the spring of 1848 Franklin Keeney resigned the clerkship and J.L. Covert was chosen to fill his place.

During the summer of 1848 Eld. F.J. Whitfield removed from Canada and Settled in the neighborhood and Eld. Wilson Mosher removed from Pittstown N.Y. and Settled in Otisco and during the winter of 1848-9 they united in holding Serial meetings that resulted in a revival. Quite a large number professed religion and united with the church. At this time Eld. Godfrey was not able to get from his house but on two different occasions he invited the neighbors to his house and preached to them while lying upon his bed. About one year later he was so much improved in health that he was carried to the School House upon a bed and addressed the Congregation Sitting in his chair. He opened the Service by Singing an original hymn the first lines of which are as follows

"Two long years have passed away"

"Since I have met you here."

A few months Subsequently he was able to resume regular preaching. At first he preached Sitting in his chair and later he was able to Stand behind the desk.. About this period in the history of the Church Adventism produced serious divisions and the membership of the church was considerably depleted. Notwithstanding this discouragement the little band continued Steadfast to the position assumed at the organisation. As Eld. Godfrey’s health was quite poor he was ancious to find among the members of the church a Suitable person to assist him in the pastoral relation. He found Such a man in the person of John L. Covert. He was a man of character, zeal and intelligence and proved a very efficient Co-laborer. He commenced preaching as a lay labour about the year 1854. And on the first day of Feb. 1857, by unanimous request of the church he was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry. Eld. J.L. Covert continued a co-labor until the death of Eld. N. Godfrey, Feb. 21st 1858. For 15 years Eld. Godfrey was pastor of the church and administered its affairs with commendable zeal and wisdom. He was a man of virtue and christian excellence and his death cast a cloud of Sadness over the whole community. At the next fellowship meeting of the church March 10th 1858 Eld. J.L. Covert was unanimously chosen pastor. On the 8th day of Feb. 1860 Eld. Elijah Stoddard assisted the pastor in a series of meetings. The Spirit of the Lord Spread through the community and quite a number of persons made a profession of religion and united with the church. Every thing moved along prosperously until 1863 When Eld. Covert resigned the pastorate. And soon after Eld. F.J. Whitfield was chosen as his sucsessor and served the church for ten months when he removed to Canada leaving the pastorate vacant for two years from 1863 to 1865 no records were kept and hence exact dates cannot be given. Soon after Eld. Whitfield removed to Canada Eld. Wilson Mosher was unanimously chosen pastor. On the 29th day of April 1865 a legal corporation was formed and initatory steps were taken to erect a house of worship. The membership was Small, but after much struggle and much individual Sacrafice the enterprise was completed and on the 26th day of Sept. 1868 the house now owned and occupied by the Society was dedicated to the worship of God and his son Jesus Christ with appropriote Services. The Sermon was preached by the venerable Eld. D. Millard, one of the pioneer ministers of the denomination. The erection of this House of worship was a great triumph and was accomplished only by much Sacrafice and perserverance. In the fall of 1871 Eld. E. Mudge was engaged to preach once a month, Eld. Mosher Still continuing Semi monthly Sevice. This arrangement was continued only for a single year after which Eld. W. Mosher continued to serve the church until the 10th day of June 1873, when he was called from earth to meet the rewards of a devoted Christian life at the right hand of God. Eld. Mosher was a man of great moral worth. He loved the cause of Christ and his life was a complete exemplification of the religion he espoused. His death Spread gloom over the entire community. At the next fellowship meeting Eld. W.R. Perry was elected pastor of the church. Bro. Perry was a man of zeal in the cause but owing to weakness of body he could do but little ministerial labor. Owing to this fact an opportunity offered and Eld. Leman N. Barber was chosen Assistant pastor. Bro. Barber continued in the capacity until Feb. 1876 and much success attended his labours. He was assisted in Dec. 1875 in a Series of meetings by Eld. G.W. Sherman and much good was accomplished. In June 1876 Eld. Perry died and Eld. S.S. Slighter who succeeded Eld. Barber as assistant pastor became the pastor. He labored with the church for one year and to good acceptance. He was a congregationalist but heartily in favor of union and cooperation. It was during this summer that Eld. G.W. Sherman removed into the neighborhood and commenced preaching once in two weeks. On the experation of Bro. Slighters term of engagement Bro. Sherman performed all the duties of pastor but was not formally chosen to that position until Nov. 3rd 1877. He continued to labor with the church until Aug. 10th 1878 when he resigned the pastorate and accepted a field of labor in Eastern Michigan. The church was without a pastor until Nov. 17th when Eld. E. Mudge having been chosen to the pastorate entered upon his duties. On the 28th of Dec. 1878 a two days meeting commenced the pastor was assisted in the meeting by Sister Jennie Thomson of Canada. The Saturday meeting was well attended and the interest manifested was encouraging. The Sunday Services were largely attended and Sister Thomson preached to good acceptance. On the 22nd day of Feb. 1879 an anniversary Fellowship meeting was held and a general attendance of members was secured. The meeting was of more than usual interest. All the Sunday morning Service Feb. 23rd The pastor, Rev. E. Mudge, preached a historical Sermon in which he carefully reviewed the history of the church for the period of thirty Six years.

A motion unanimously prevailed adopting the following as a basis of organization and as fitting to be read at the reception of members viz

We the undersigned, imbued with a deep Sense of our responsibility to God. Seeking a growing conformity to the image of his Son, disposed to labor for the union and co-operation of all the followers of Christ, and for the Spiritual interests of the community, and the Spread of the Gospel of the Son of God, do hereby associate ourselves togather in A religious body to be governed by the following

Fundamental Principles

1 We accept the name Christian as apostolic, and as best expressing the objects of this organization viz- growth in the Christian life and Spirit and the union of All Christian believers therefore this Church Shall be known as the Christian Church of Vergennes.

2 We accept the Holy Scriptures, and especially the teachings and life of Christ and the teachings of his inspired Appostles as the rule of our faith, conduct and discipline, believing the Same Sufficient for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and instrution in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect throughly furnished unto all good works.

3 We accept Christian Character as our test of fellowship, and welcom to our communion all who "Abhor that which is evil and cleave to that which is good" All who love God believe in Christ and who aim to be perfect in thought word and deed.

4 We believe it the privalege and duty of every man to investigate truth for himself and that every Christian Should conscientiously "Search the Scriptures" and honestly accept and preform what they enjoyn therefore we grant the right of individual interpretation of Scripture So far as not inconsistent with Moral and Christian Character and we heartily fellowship all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in Sincerity and in Truth wherever the Same may be found.

Covenant

Receiving the above as the faith of this church, and avowing our love to God and our entire consecration to Jesus Christ as the head over all things to the Church, as our Savior and redeemer we do no covenant with God and with one another to honor this our high profession by a well ordered life and a godly conversation and to walk in the due observance of Gospel ordinances and duties, and to admonish and reprove one another in the Spirit of Christian Affection, and covenanting further to cherish that Charity and forbearance one for another, and for all Christians and all mankind which is the bond of perfectness, we do humbly ask the devine blessing upon our efforts to live the life of Christ and to advance the principles of the Christian religion.
