Notes for JESSE (5) WOODBURY:

Jesse's family moved to Allendale, MI when he was one year old. His education was acquired in the district schools in Allendale Township. When he was old enough, he worked with his half-brother Frank Fox, cutting lumber on the farm.

In 1892, Jesse erected a planing mill and head ing factory in company with Dennis Bennett at Allendale Center. He rented the farm.

He was a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.

Politically, he was a Republican, and in 1893 was elected Township Treasurer.

He started a business in what old-timers called the "Barracks". Around 1900 he had a shop on the ground floor and the family lived upstairs. He sold farm implements and also windmills which were a source of power for pumping water.

He served as Township Supervisor, 1901-1904. He was elected Sheriff of Ottawa County in 1904 and served for four years. He served as State Land Agent for the State of Michigan until he died at the age of 51.

Served as president of the University Alumnae Club, the Farm & Garden Club and the Tuesday Musical.

She received the 1988 Athena Award, University of Michigan Alumnae Council.
