FOURTH MICHIGAN CAVALRY

The Fourth Michigan Cavalry was authorized July 1, 1862 with Colonel Robert H. G. Minty of Detroit, Lieut. Colonel of the Third Michigan Cavalry as commander and was ordered into rendezvous at Detroit on the twenty ninth of July. It was mustered into service of the United States on the twenty ninth of August following with the maximum force, being recruited from various parts of the State. When it left the State of the twenty sixth of September, it had on its rolls twelve hundred and thirty three officers and men. It was fully armed, mounted and equipped. And its destination was Louisville, Kentucky.

The regiment marched from Louisville, October 10, and was in advance on Stanford, Ky., where Morgan was stationed with 2500 men and two pieces of artillery, attacking and driving him as far as Crabb Orchard, killing a Lieutenant colonel, taking a major and eleven men prisoners, when the regiment marched back via Springfield to Munfordsville.

From the attack on Morgan’s position at Stanford and the pursuit of this notorious guerrilla, to the capture of Jefferson Davis near Irwinsville, Georgia, May 10, 1865, the record of the regiment is brilliant above all precedent.

The Fourth Cavalry left for home on the June 17 when it reached Nashville where it was mustered out on July 1 and paid off and in command of Colonel Pritchard, preceded to Detroit via Louisville, arriving July 10, disbanded.
