Kent County

The organization of this regiment was especially authorized by the War Department, and to be composed principally of engineers and mechanics.

The authority to raise it with the sanction of the Governor of the State, was given to William P. Innis of Grand Rapids, a practical civil engineer, who was appointed Colonel, and vested with full power to designate his officers, to be commissioned by the Governor.

The recruitment of this regiment commenced in August, 1861 which progressed rapidly and by the end of October following was reported ready for muster, which was accomplished on the eleventh of December by Captain H. R. Mizner, U. S. Army, the muster to take affect from the twenty-ninth of October.

The regiment in command of Colonel William P. Innes left Marshall, the rendevous, with a force of one thousand and thirty-two men and officers, on the seventeenth of December, under orders to report to General Buell, commandant of the Department of Ohio at Louisville, Kentucky, and on reporting, it was assigned to duty on four detachments.

One in command of the Colonel to report to General McCook, commanding Division at Mumfordsville, Kentucky, consisting of non-commissioned staff and companies B, E, & I.

One of three companies of Lieutenant Colonel Hunton to report to General Thomas, command- ing First division army at Lebanon, Kentucky, comprising companies D, F, & G.

The third under Major Hopkins, to report to General Nelson, commanding third division at New Haven, Kentucky with companies C & H.

The other in command of John B. Yates was directed to General Mitchell, commanding fourth division at Bacon Creek, Kentucky with companies A & K.

The labors of this regiment may be conceived when it is remembered that during June, 1862, it built seven bridges on the Memphis and Charlestown railroad line totaling in length 2758 feet and from twelve to fifty-six feet in height. Its losses for this year were seventy-eight. There was enacted in Congress in 1862 that the Michigan Engineers should be placed on the same footing as the U. S. Engineers and also that the regiment should be increased to twelve companies of one hundred fifty men each. During 1863-4 the continued service of this command was the truest evidence of all that men can suffer and accomplish in the cause of their country. Detachments of the command were everywhere always attending to render the progress of the army of any if not all of the obstacles which nature and rebellion placed in its way. Its terms of service expired October 31, 1864 when a few officers and men retired, but the greater part volunteered and with the addition of recruits maintained full strength performing magnificent service until the close of the war. It was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, September 22, reported at Jackson, September 25 and was discharged October 1, 1865.
