Rev. G. Broene, Seventy-Fourth Birthday

(Article in Grandville Avenue Record, January 15, 1912, Pg. 1)

Because of illness Rev. G. Broene of 813 Oakland avenue has ceased his work in the pastorship of his church. An old pioneer, well known and highly respected, every communicant wishing many more birthdays. Rev. Broene was installed as a pastor 35 years ago, and notwithstanding his long and continued service his mind is clear, his vision good and considerable vigor left. He has preached nearly every Sunday this summer. Rev. Broene is President of the Franklin Street Men’s Society of the church.

It may be interesting to review his biography. He was born in Uelsen, Bentheim, Germany, on September 16, 1838. After migrating to this country and preparing himself for the ministry, he was installed as pastor of the Noordeloos, Mich., congregation in 1877, by Rev. G. E. Boer, a former professor at the local theological school. He remained in Noordeloos until May 12, 1887, when he left for Roseland, Chicago, Ill. He was installed in this congregation on June 8 and served it until October 12, when he severed his relations with the Roseland people and entered the Zutphen, Mich., parsonage.

On October 20, 1889, Rev. Broene left Zutphen and began his labors in the Crosby street, Grand Rapids church. He labored in the local church for an unbroken period of 15 years.

In 1904 he was seized with illness which wholly disabled him and in August necessitated him to request his dismissal from active service. Classis Grand Rapids west of his denomination granted the request, and at the same time promised him a yearly pension.
