Erich Duus Dies; Was Foundry Head

Erich Duus, 83, president of the Rempis and Duus foundry for the past 15 years, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's hospital. He had suffered a lingering illness and had been confined to his bed for the past four weeks.
Mr. Duus was born 13 Jan 1860, in Germany, and came to Grand Rapids in 1893. he went into the foundry business here with Amos Hanson and Later was affiliated with Rempis and Gallmeyer. Fifteen years ago, the firm became Rempis and Duus and Mr. Duus became president, a position he retained until the time of his death, althoug he had retired from active participation in the work at the age of 65 years.
Mr. Duus had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Albert W. Knight, 625 Prince st., SE., for the past 13 years, following the death of his wife, Sophie. He had previously resided at 855 Third st., NW.
Active in Masonic circles for many years, Mr. Duus was prominent in Doric lodge 342, F. & A. M. and DeMolai Commandery. He was a member of the Elks lodge. He had been an enthusiastic sportsman until the time of his final illness.
Surviving are one son, Edward W. Duus, and one daughter, Mrs. Knight, also two granddaughters, Miss Muriel Duus and Mrs. Don Paul Kingery.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Alt mortuary. Burial will be in Rosedale Memorial Park cemetery.
Services at the funeral home will be in charge of the Elks lodge. Graveside services will be conducted by the DeMolai Commandery, Knights Templar.
