Dr. Henry P. Kooistra, 60, consultant in surgery at St. Mary's Hospital since 9132, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital of a heart ailment. He was ill 11 days. He resided at 1564 Pontiac Rd. SE.

Born in Burum, the Netherlands, Dr. Kooistra came to Grand Rapids in 1911 and had been a resident since. He graduated from Calvin College in 1927 and from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1931.

He was a member and past president of the Grand Rapids Music Society, a charter member of Pine Rest Foundation, member of Peninsular Club, the Lions Club and the Lotus Club.

He was a fellow of the International College of surgeons, fellow of the American Medical Associaton, member of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, the Michigan State and the Kent county Medical Societies and a member of the Michigan Association of Professions. He was a life member of the American College of Surgeons.

Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; a son, Dr. William H. Kooistra, chief psychologist at Pine Rest Christian Hospital; a daughter, Elizabeth Ruth Kooistra of Grand Rapids; a brother, Clarence, of Lakewood, N. Y.; a sister, Miss Gertrude Kooistra of Grand Rapids and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Zaagman Funeral Home, with Rev. Clarence Boomsma of Calvin Christian Reformed Church and Rev. Ralph Heynen, chaplain at Pine Rest, officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park.

Physician Held Honors
Dr. Kooistra Won Awards for Papers

A record of personal and professional achievement marked the 34 year medical career here of Dr. Henry P. Kooistra who died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital at the age of 60.

Dr. Kooistra was awarded a master of science degree in general surgery from the University of Michigan in 1940 - a rare achievement in those days. In 1941, his paper on "Pilonidal Sinuses" won the Foster Foundation award of St. Mary's Hospital.

He received a life membership award of $500 in 1942 from the American College of Surgeons for the excellence and detail in his 1,269 page set of medical records covering 100 operations at Blodgett Memorial, Butterworth and St. Mary's Hospitals.

At the university he was one of the foundes and the first president of Phi Alpha Kappa, a graduate fraternity. He also was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity.

He was the first chairman of the Kent County Cancer Detection Center and has been a liason member of the Disaster Committee of the Kent county Red Cross Chapter.

Dr. Kooistra collected Flemish and dutch paintings and donated several of them to Calvin College and to his church, Calvin Christian Reformed Church. finest of the collection is a Van Dyke.

He also was an ardent collector of early American medical devices, his mortar and pestle collection being recognized as one of the most complete in the nation.
