Death Claims Mrs. J. W. Phillips, Pioneer of the Early Forties

By the death of Mrs. J. W. Phillips, 84 years old, 201 Summer avenue, N.W., which occurred Saturday, Grand Rapids loses another of the old school of pioneer, who came here from Canada when Grand River valley was little more than a wilderness. Mrs. Phillips was the mother of the late Alderman Charles H. Phillips and the widow of J. W. Phillips, for years a well-known figure in Grand Rapids politics and business circles. Mrs. Phillips was the eldest daughter of Daniel Schermerhorn and came to this city with her parents in the early forties. The late Lewis G. Phillips, another son, was well known in this city. Her splendid personal qualities endeared her to all her friends.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John J> Deem, Mrs. D. P. Aldrich and Mrs. W. Andr. John, all of this city. The funerla will be held, Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from the residence. Burial will be private.
