Veteran Police Officer Is Dead

Charles H. Saunders Was Member of Force back in Seventies

Charles H. Saunders, 79 years old, died at his residence, 1246 Plainfield avenue, N. E., Friday night, after an illness of a year.
Mr. Saunders will be remembered as a member of the police force many years ago, having entered the department early in 1870. He served on the force 13 years, becoming a detective upon retirement for the regular force. For several years Mr. Saunders operated a grocery store but never lost his interest in the police department and sheriff's office.
When the Civil war began, Mr. Saunders enlisted in Company B, Tenth New York heavy artillery, serving with credit throughout the war. He came to Grand Rapids in 1866.
Surviving are one son, Henry, of Grand Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Comey, of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. W. J. Berry, of Detroit, and three grandchildren. His brother, Ezra Saunders, who died about two weeks ago in New York, was also a member of the Grand Rapids police force some years ago and was a veteran of the Civil war.
Arrangements for the funeral are not completed.
