Olivet Club of Grand Rapids

(Grand Rapids Herald, December 31, 1933)

The Olivet Club of Grand Rapids was organized several years ago for the preservation of the Olivet spirit among alumni of the college. Occasionally alumni and friends of the college from Holland, Grand Haven, Greenville, Rockford and other nearby towns have joined with the Grand Rapids club in accomplishing the more important undertakings.

Five years ago at the time of the completion of the new MacKay gymnasium, the Grand Rapids club furnished the alumni clubroom in that building. Since then, it has helped with the furnishing of Blair hall, the new men’s dormitory, and the new $250,000 residence hall for women, which was opened last fall.

Through the efforts of the Olivet club, the college a cappella choir has given concerts in Grand Rapids several times. For the past five years the club has sponsored the concerts, making the arrangements and assuming the financial responsibility. The concerts have been given in Park Congregational church the last three years and they have been well received.

A Christmas tea is given each year for those Grand Rapids women currently attending Olivet college. This year it was held in the home of Mrs. Henry B. Davis of Youell avenue SE. The honor guests were Misses Clara Thomas, Jean Thompson, Helen Bisbee, Evelyn Barr, Marjorie Locke, Elizabeth Claire and Esther Andre.

Since the completion of the new residence halls, the club has conducted a campaign for new students with high scholastic standing, genius for leadership and strength of character. Several activities are held each year such as garden parties and puppet shows and the proceeds are used for scholarships. Those receiving scholarships this year are Miss Helen Bisbee, who graduated from South High school and Arthur Bomer who finished at Junior college and entered Olivet as a junior.

Mrs. Edward L. Ransom was elected president at a recent meeting of the club, Miss Vera Bacheller, vice president, and Mrs. Henry B. Davis, secretary and treasurer.
