Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School- 1865

Transcribed by J. Pulte

An exerpt from ‘A History Of Kent County, Michigan’ by Chas. C. Chapman & Co., 1881 says:

‘District No. 1 (fractional with Casnovia) was organized in 1853, with nine scholars in attendance at school. A small log house was erected and used until 1861, when the present frame building was erected at a cost of $500. The former stood on section 31, and the latter stands on the west side of section 30, near the residence of Mr. Chubb.’

The Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School journal originally came to the White family from my great, great Uncle Edgar Chase who was elected the school director September 3, 1877. He continued through the time period for the journal to 1885. He may have continued the job after that, but I only have this school journal.

According to oral history in my family, when the school district was finished recording the 1865 to 1885 data from the journal to another format instead of just destroying it they asked Uncle Edgar if he would like to have it. He said yes and then eventually gave it to the White family because my Great Grandma Elizabeth White and her daughter Millie Weiss and niece Virginia White had been collecting genealogical materials which contained information about the White family, and all the White family’s children had also gone to the Tyrone Township, District No. 1 School during this time beginning in 1872.

The record contains the financial records, teacher contract agreements, and school board minutes, as well as the list of students who attended each year. This school journal begins Sept. 1865. The school student censuses are listed for each year in the same order as they appear in the school journal. The names are transcribed as they were spelled, and are followed by the student’s ages for September of that school year. If the age is not listed it was not written in this journal.
