The City State Bank, Lowell, Michigan

Acknowledgement: This History of Lowell has been made possible largely thorugh the great generosity of the business men and institutions mentioned in the following pages. Grateful acknowledgement is extended.

First of all in connection with Lowell’s Centennial celebration which was held in August of 1931, this institution sincerely congratulates the official family of the Lowell Board of Trade and all of its coworkers in amking it the outstanding celebration of its kind ever held in a community many times the size of Lowell.

We feel that this page should be of a historical nature, rather than a page of advertising and from the official records of the bank, we find the following:

The charter of the bank was dated February 14, 1907, and we find that during the first few years of operation, the Board of Directors consisted of such well and favorably known names as Orton Hill, John S. Bergin, F. W. Hinyan, D. G. Look, T. A. Murphy, R. Van Dyke, W. A. Watts, A. W. Weekes, H. A. Peckham, R. J. Flanagan and Wm. T. Condon, some of whom are still serving on the Board and as officers.

From the above list, death has taken from us Orton Hill, John S. Bergin, A. W. Weekes, H. A. Peckham and R. J. Flanagan, whose stock interests have been handed down to their heirs and is now being held by them, excepting the single case of A. W. Weekes who sold his stock and whose son, H. L. Weekes, later purchased stock and is now a director.

During the years 1914 and 1918, John A. Arehart, Harry Day, L. E. Lampkin and H. L. Weekes, above mentioned, became Directors, so that the Board of Directors that has served continuously since 1918 consists of John A. Arehart, Wm. T. Condon, Harry Day, L. E. Lampkin, D. G. Look, R. Van dyke and H. L. Weekes. Therefore it will be noted that there has been no change in the Board for a period of over thirteen years; neither has there been a change in officers from the Cashier to President during the same period of time.

The first President of the bank was Orton Hill who served from 1907 to 1908, and who in turn was followed by A. W. Weekes, who served until 1914 and who, in turn, was followed by R. Van Dyke who has served in that capacity continuously to the present time.

Wm. T. Condon and D. G. Look became Vice presidents during the early years of the organization and are still serving in those positions.

The institutions has had four Cashiers. The first was W. A. Watts, serving from 1907 to 1909, the second, T. A. Murphy, who was succeeded by R. W. Slayton. The present Cashier, Harry day, became Cashier in 1916 and has served continuously since that time.

The bank has always been known as a very conservative institution, catering to the upbuilding of Lowell and its community and with its well known conservative policies, no doubt will continue to serve well and long.
