WHITNEY SCHOOL, DISTRICT NO. 5 FRACTIONAL

Whitney School, the first school house in the Whitney School District No. 5fr., as we know it today, was a small log building, located near the S.E. corner of what is now the Sullivan farm.

The second school was a two-room building, which had an enrollment of ninety-five pupils. The ground for this building was donated by the Pfeiffer’s, out of their farm. This is today owned by John Petchauer. This building was moved to the Braun farm in 1894, and was used for a house. This farm is now owned by Howard Batey and the old house burned several years ago.

In 1894, a brick school with a basement, was built on the ground of the old building site but more land was donated by Mr. Whitney. This made between one-fourth and one-half acres. This building burned in the fall of the year 1923. Miss Shinn was the teacher at that time.

The present building was built in 1923 and 1924 and it was ready for school in the fall of 1924 with Miss Shinn as the teacher. More ground was bought from Mr. Petchauer which makes up the present grounds used by the school.

Mr. Floyd A. Baker has taught in the Whitney School since 1935. Mr. Baker has already put in thirty-seven years of teaching. Today all district schools teach from kindergarten to the 3rd grave inclusive. The enrollment is thirty-one pupils. The remaining grades to to Byron Center Public School.
