Diary of Hannah Pierce, 1835 - 1873

Transcribed by M. Diana Davis

Journal of Hannah Pierce
(b. March 09, 1807 - d. January 01, 1873)

Compilers Notes: The Journal entries below were copied from Hannah's original writings by her niece, Luella R Pierce
(b. March 26, 1866 - d. November 1930). Luella copied the journal entries in longhand into 4 notebooks in 1925/26. I
have those 4 notebooks, and have typed/copied Hannah's journal into the format found below. Any spelling errors have
been left in the text; however, because I do not have the original writings, spelling errors may have been the result
of Luella's original copy, or not.

All of the birth and death dates for my own family (PIERCE, FIELD, CHENEY, DAVIS) referenced in Hannah's journal have
been verified through census records, bible records, birth and death records, etc., as have many of the other dates
for others mentioned in her journal; the names and dates listed below have been found to be accurate.

Hannah Pierce

Hannah Pierce was one of 6 children born to John Pierce (b. March 9, 1769 - d. October 6, 1862) and Deborah Field
(b. August 22, 1778 d. November 27, 1862 ). Four of these children lived to be adults:

1. Mary Pierce, b. September 28, 1798 d. October 21, 1825
2. William F. Pierce, b. November 29, 1802 d. September 1884
3. Hannah Pierce, b. March 9, 1807 d. January 1, 1873
4. Edward Pierce, b October 17, 1809 d. December 28, 1894

Hannah and her family were Quakers, (known as "Friends") as were most of their friends and neighbors, both in
New York and Michigan. Hannah was clearly educated, and involved in her community, but never married nor had
any children. She lived with her parents until they died, and then called "home", her brother Edward's farm
in Fairfield twp., Lenawee County MI. She lived with some type of illness that came upon her in her late twenties.
She does not specifically say what it was, but includes Headaches, Tiredness, and sometimes weeks in bed. Her
niece Luella refers to her in an end-note as "a great sufferer".

"FRIENDS" AND FAMILY NAMES

The Pierce Family were Quakers and Farmers, and therefore lived in just such communities. Hannah' parents, John
Pierce and Deborah Field, were married in 1797. Deborah Field's parents were William Field, and Hannah VanWyck.
John Pierce's parents were William Pierce and Deborah Field; they were married in the Chappaqua (Quaker-Friends)
Meeting House in Dutchess Co., NY.

At some point, John Pierce and Deborah Field moved to Madison Co., NY, and then to Williamson, NY. One of Deborah's
sisters lived there also, Catherine Field, who married John Underwood. All of John's children lived also in the
community: Mary Pierce, who married Isaac Webb in 1820, William Pierce who married Lydia Smith in 1825, Hannah
Pierce, and Edward Pierce, who married Emmeline Cheney in 1832.

In the Spring of 1836, John and Deborah Pierce, along with their children and their spouses, all moved to Palmyra
township, Lenawee Co., MI. They moved together with their Friends (Quaker) Society. That is, many of the families
that made up their Friends Society in Madison, NY, all moved to the same area in Michigan, at about the same time.
The other Quaker Families that belong to this Friends Society, and who moved from NY to MI included the families of:
Angel, Hoag, Dodge, Laign, Worth, Durfee, Gibbs, Irish, Walton, Clark, Smith, Jones, Pierce, Underwood.

In Palmyra MI, other Friends had already moved and founded the new Friends Society there. The spiritual leader of
this group was Jonathan Harned, and his sons. Others who had already moved and settled included: Buttle, Sackrider,
Secoy, Gardner, Titus, Lapham Mott, Crane, and Vanaken..

Hannah's Journal begins in January 1835, in Williamson, NY.

Thoughts on Spring.
When we contemplate the vicissitudes of the seasons, the order in which they pass away and succeed each other and hot they are adapted to the comfort and convenience of man, we are apt to be struck with admiration and say, how wonderfull are the works of an All creating hand. Each successive season affords us new pleasures and advantages, but for beauty spring far exceeds them all. It appears more pleasant for comeing next in course after winter. Especially if we have had a cold and dreary one. Where for a long the whole face of nature has been clothed in her white robe, and scarcely any thing to bee seen in the vegitable kingdom that has the appearance of life, save now and then an evergreen tree in the forest. After such a season as this, to see spring appear with all its charms is truly pleasing. Then the buds expand and put forth their leaves, the fields gradually put on their green apparrel, and the numerous blossoms prevent to our view every variety of shape and couler. The whole creation seems to wear a smile, and joyfully hails the return of spring. The innocent playfull lambs skip and bound about the fields, and even the feathered tribe appear engaged in praiseing their Creator by pouring forth their melodious notes. Then let not man who is the noblest of all the works of God, be behind the lower order of beings in recounting the joys of spring and raiseing aspirations of praise and gratitude, to their Almigty Creator and Preserver. 5th mo. 1835. 1st Beaman Hoag's came here last night and staid before they started their journey for Michigan. 2nd to 8th The girls from the corners visited us to day. 9th to 12th Been to the corners today. 13th to 15th Been to Wm. Heard very good discourses from several on the subject of slavery, as well as other interesting subjects. Meeting adjourned about 2 o'clock, came to Thomas Fults to stay during the meeting. 16th Lydia P. Mott made a prayer soon after the meeting gathered. Lucretia Mott spoke beautifully on the subject of female education endeavoring to convince them of the advantage arising from a highly cultivated mind, persuading them to not be satisfied with merely a knowledge of the common branches of education, but prove to the world that females are capable of acquiring a knowledge of the higher branches also. L. P. Mott addressed the young sisters very feelingly wishing them to lay aside the trimmings and ornaments with which so many were adorned, and appropriate the money to benevolent purposes. 17th Attended publick meeting to day, it was large and very good. 18th Heard much good council to day. The old and young were entreated off to live a life of religion and virtue. Desireing they might turn from those fading things of time, and set their hearts on that which supports them in this life, and procure them a crown of blessedness in eternity. 19th to 20th Many subjects claimed the attention of the meeting yesterday and to day, our sisters from a distance expressed much satisfaction in attending this meeting. After leaving home and making several calls we arrived at Palmira about 12 o'clock, took dinner at William Patriages. About 3 o'clock went on board the Greenville, James Whitney, master, and 60 passengers. 17th Time passed on quite agreably until we came to prepare bed last night, there was 35 women and children lodged in the cabbin (if it may be called lodgeing). I then thought if I were at home I would like to remain there. Got to Rochester early in the morning, left a number of passengers, and took a few more, passed through Brockport about noon, at Holly took on board Elisa Franklin and her 2 children. She is an agreable passenger and at presant the only female besides our company. 18th All well and in good spirits this morning, had a good nights rest on getting up this morning. Found ourselves in Middleport, soon after passed through Royalton. Got to Lockport at 10 o'clock. Walked up in the village to view the scenery around, here we can see much of the works of art displayed, but as for the works of nature, I cannot say much in praise of its beauty. 4 o'clock passed through Tondawanda village. Got to Black-rock about sunset. 9 in the evening got to Buffalo, the Captain has concluded to let our company stay on the boat to night. 19th Put our goods on board the Charles Townsend, Captain Fox, commander. Took a walk up in the city but returned at the first ringing of the bell. Took seat on the upper deck, pensively observing what was passing around me. How grand, how sublime the scenery then appeared, the city in view, the harbour filled with splendid boats, the lake smooth except a little ruffle to the water. At 9 o'clock the bell rang for the last time, which summoned all the passengers on board the boat, where for the presant we expect will be the prisioned homes of several hundred. I had not one solitary friend to part with at Buffalo, but I saw others taking leave of each other which reminded me that but few days since I had parted with friends and a place I once could call my home. And as we set sail I silently said, Farewell, Farewell to my native country. I am now bound for a distant land, yet not knowing that I shall ever reach its shores, perhaps some calamitous event may take place which will consign us to a watery grave, where we must lie buried beneath the rolling billows. Gladly would I have returned to some lone grove, where for a short time I might roam unseen, but this is not my privilege, I might be surrounded by people of different nations and different classes, all calculated to attract ones attention, and I could not indulge my self in those melancholy reflections. I soon fanished them from my presence and resumed by wanted gaity. It is now nearly noon. The sun shines with all its splendor, the lake appears beautifull, and at presant every countenance bespeaks happiness while Erie's proud waves are wafting us on towards our destined port. 20th 9 o'clock passed through Dunkirk, called at Van Buren. Made a short call at Fairport on grand river. 12 o'clock called at Cleaveland. 2 evenings at Port Huron. Cannot be landed at Toledo until we have been at Detroit. 21st 6 o'clock in the morning, are in Detroit river, the prospects is indeed beautifull on the Canada and Michigan shores. Stoped at Fort Malden to take on wood. It is a small place and has the appearance of age. Arrived at Detroit about 10 this morning. Walked out to have a view of the City this afternoon. There appears to be considerable business done here, many elegent buildings to be seen, as well as some very ancient, went on board a schooner bound for Chicago. Returned to our boat found it almost emptied, sweept and garnished, most of the passengers were to be landed at Detroit, and have now left the boat. Among them all we could see people of different nations and of almost every class. Among the company was three Indian young men, from Mackinaw, had been to Washington on business and were returning home. Their features and complexions were like Indians, but they were dressed in as good fashion as any gentlemen on board, and their behaviour full as decorous. There was a young woman who when I first saw her, attracted my attention. She started from Buffalo, there was a family came down to the dock with her. They were not Americans probably Swiss. Their parting was a vary hearty one, then a young man excorted her to the upper deck, bade her a last farewell and returned, as the boat left the shore they all gave a parting signal. It was some time before she became composed. I then thought if an opportunity should present I would endeavor to become a little acquainted with her history. At length I happened in her company, and after making observations on the scenery which then presented itself to our view, I observed to her that she appeared to be traveling alone, and enquired her place of destination. She told me she was going to her friends living near Detroit, that she had been living 2 years in Buffalo with a family to whom she had been vary much attached and was worry to part with them although she was going to relatives. I did not like to be to inquisitive so I made no further enquiry about the young man or the family she had parted with. 22nd I must give a little description of the stile we took tea and breakfast in Detroit, as well as our nights lodgeing. It was so damp and unhealthy on deck, we went down in to the steerage cabbin to sleep. It had been cleaned and was nice. They made the beds up in the berths. My bed was in the third story, and when I got there it was like to come down so most of us made them on the floor and slept vary well after all our trouble. For tea we spread chests together for a table made our tea and put our victuals on it, we had quite a variety considering all things and a good appetite made our repast sweet. Our breakfast was about the same with the addition of a dish of coffee. In such stile as this we have lived most of the time since we came on the water. Some could find a seat others stand up, some drinking tea out a tea cup another a tin cup. Once have an earthan plate another a tin dish. &c forth&c on. 7 o'clock in the morning, the bell is ringing. The passengers are scrabling on board and we are about to leaved the far famed Detroit. 12 o'clock are now in sight of Monroe. 3 o'clock arrived at Toledo, found a wagon going to Whiteford, about 12 miles, which would carry some of us, so we set out, well loaded and crowded, got to Ira Aldrich's late in the evening. 23rd Engaged the same team to carry us to Adrian. After leaving Whiteford, went through a swamp 6 miles long with a few inhabitants, and worst road I ever saw. Then found a few acres of dry land where was a sort of tavern. Then went through Cottonwood swamp, which is said to be 6 miles long, but I should think from the distance there might be 5 quarters to 1 mile. Stoped to Blissfield to feed the horses and refresh ourselves, went through the Palmyra, and Leroy, both new villages springing up in the woods. Evening Thoughts. The approach of eve whispers aloud, Now is the time for pensive thought, The hour that man retires to rest, And natures is to stillness brought. I need not retire to a moonlit bower But will recline on the window my weary head Here I can muse on the various scenes And admire the wonders around me spread. The western sky all tinged with red Transparent clouds exalt the scene The arch of Heaven and all around Appears majestic and scerene. And next the rising moon appears To cheer the darkness with her light To describe her destined course around During the gloomy hours of night. How mighty, and how wondrous too Those works which are performed on high Those spacious orbs which suspended hang In the broad open space of sky. No lofty pillers support them there Man with all his art cannot them controll The hand that formed them, keeps them there Within their proper bounds to roll. Almost three months have winged their way Since we a little cheerfull band Set out to seek our fortunes In this far distant land. Honor we did not expect Riches we could not find So we have no treasures but those we imported An honest fame and a contented mind. Here we are settled on a small plantation Whose circumference is easily bounded Still I think we augh not to complain While with blessings we are surrounded. 19th Been to Adrian to day. To day we dedicate this spot A dwelling for the dead A resting place for moral man A place to lay the clay cold head. We are now assembled to consign Unto the silent dust The remains of one whose spirit’s gone Unto the Lord, we trust. Her lifeless form must now be laid Here in this linely grave Yet soon there may be spread around The remains of the young and brave. Perhaps some one now standing near This solomn scene to view May ere many days pass by Be called to bid all things adieu. Let each one think it may be me Let such reflections be instilled But may many years roll on Before this vacant ground is filled. 3rd to 4th Wm. and Lydia went with us to Abram Laign's. 5th to 6th Company to day to eat peaches. 7th Had a visit from Elijah and Phebe Browmel. 8th Cousin Elisabeth Underwood took tea here. 9th Saw the Caravan as it passed to day. 10th to 11th Jervis and Sally Cheney staid here last night. How natural and pleasant it is to take a retrospective view of by gone days, of time that will no more return. Memory will long hold dear the scenes of our childhood, and the companions of our early days. The ties of friendship that bind those who have spent the playfull hours of youth togather are not easily broken. They then can taste of unalloid pleasures, and for the most part drink of a cup unmixed with care or sorrow, but we can not say so of our after life. For within the interveil of a few short years, we see and experiance many sad changes, at one time we are blest with the smiles of fortune, at another we receive its frowns, on one day we are enjoying the blessing of health, and on the next our frail bodys have become a prey to disease. Our tempers are alike uneven, we are apt to be elated by prosperity and depressed by adversity, we do not receive the favours and frowns of Providence with evenness and composure. How often does imagination soar ahead and picture to our minds many dreams of happyness for succeeding years, but our anticipations are seldom realized, for some blast of misfortune mars our real enjoyment or blight the fair vision of our fancy. Such are the changes incident to this life. The presant time only is ours, the future we have no assurance of, yet there is a never ending eternity awaytine us when the soul shall be unclothed of its mortal robe. 4th Mo. 1837. 1st to 6th Sarah Hoag been here to day. 7th to 10th Spent the day to Sackriders. 11th to 13th Made Ann Hunt a visit this afternoon. 14th Been to Nathan Bassets to day. 15th to 19th Justus Wright called on us to day. 20th to 21st Wm., Mary and Hannah Underwood here. 22nd to 23rd Ephraim Rulond and wife been here to day. 25th to 30th Sally Cornstalk and Rebecca Pratt here yesterday. 5th Mo. 1837. 1st Laura Bixby spent the afternoon here. 7th Went to Mary Titus' after meeting. 10th Spent the afternoon at Nathaniel Hoag’s. 14th Been to Joseph L. The grave is now her low retreat No more can weeping friends surround her As when the parting was said When death's dark angel found her. But happy soul, her rest is come For her we need not mourn But for ourselves and those little ones To whom she can never more return. She has bid adieu to this lower world And found a reffuge in the skies Fondly to roam with angels there And taste the joys of Paradise. The fading Rose Tree. How changed is the scene of this beautifull Rosetree But late so gay and blooming, now sickly leaves I can see There is one rose remaining, tis but a faded gem All its sister companions are on the eve of decay They have shed their perfumes and are wasteing away Scarce a vestage of their former beauty doth reamin They have gone like the lovely, by the hand of time slain, They lie scatered and withered neath the branches the bare them And to what but corruption, now can I compare them They have surely been pleasant and usefull in their day But for this end were they made, they were destined to decay. And so is frail man no art can he desire That will stay the hand of death, for soon or late he dies Our lives at most are short, and compared unto a day Health may forsake, and vigorous youth soon pass away Dust must return to dust, and in the house of day he lain But the immortal past, the silent grave cannot contain. 28th Abagail Buck been here a few days. 31st Mary Pennings spent the week here. 8th Mo. 1839. 13th Attended the funeral of Maryette Tabor. 18th Moses Sprague been here this afternoon. 23rd Uncle John and Aunt Catherine, Joseph and Eliza Underwood took dinner here. 30th Father and Mother have both been sick with the chill-fever but are getting considerable better now. 9th Mo. 1839. 1st Ephream Rulond and Sarah, and Mary Titus been here. 14th Maria Pierce been here the past week. 22th Johnathan and Christian Harned been here since meeting. 19th Caroline Stiles been here this afternoon. 30th Abram and Ester Laign visited here to day. 10th Mo. 1839. 1st Wm. and Lydia Pierce staid here last night. 6th Richard and Anna Glasier been here to day. 9th Phebe Sackrider made a visit here this afternoon. 13th Sarah Angel and Abagail Buck been here. 14th Elen Bixby and Lucy French been here. 21st Crawford White's folks been here since meeting. 30th Been to Johnathan Harnett to day. 11th Mo. 1839. 4th Beaman and Desire Hoag been here. 9th Heard the death of little Edward Rulond to day. 14th Stephen Titus and Sarah Satherwate were married to day. 22nd Feel most sick, and quite discouraged, tho my health is some better than it has been for a few months past. Then the blessing of health I could call mine. Early that spring we moved from Madison Co. to Waine (St. of N.Y.) Then fancy soared aloft and I pictured to myself many years of health and happiness, but imaginary enjoyments are seldom realized, this I found true by dear experience, for disease soon made me its prey and has been my almost constant companion since that time, but I wish not to complain, or think the path described for me to walk in to rugged, since so many are not only deprived of the blessing of health, but of most of the comforts of life also. 1st Mo. 1840. 3rd Heard the shocking account of Samuel Tinley's death. He had talked rather harshly to some of them as they thought, and with the assistance of the young men (no doubt) they took this way to show there resentment, and gave him a few cuts with a whip as he was going to meeting. I now have the painful task to perform of recording the death of a beloved niece. Maria Irish, decease last night four months from the day of her marriage, leaving an affectionate husband to mourn her early fate. "My heart is pained my a solemn sound" that clearly says Maria is gone. Yes, she, to whom we were closely bound We now have to bemoan. But can we wish her peace to mar Though nature shrinks and holds her dear Yet reason says she is better far Than to be held in suffering here. She had long been deprived of health But her noble mind did not despair. She hoped ere long to regain that wealth And in life's joys one more to share. But dire disease made her its prey And naught her life could save. It brought her low with unbending sway A subject for the grave. When death's cold hand each tie did sever That bound her closely here And bade her part with friends forever Till joined again in another sphere. Then her gentle spirit soared above To realms of clearest light To partake of pure celestial love Of cheer and calm delight. Where ransomed souls always rejoice And glorious anthems raise Charmed by their great Creator's voice And ceaseless chant his praise. Commending her husband and children dear to the protecting care of an all wise creator. Who she trusted would care for his afflicted ones, and now amidst our great reason for regret, our needful sorrowing for her departure from life we have this great consolation that our loss is her infinite gain, feeling well assured that she has gone to receive the rich rewards of well doing. Or a life well spent of usefulness, and what more can we ask than to be found worthy of meeting her on Cananus happy Shores where the now tear moistened eyes will have no cause to shed the pearly drops, and feeling hearts can no more be lacerated by the keen anguish of grief. It is to be feared the dysentery is a going to be very prevalent several of our family are taken with it. 8th, 9th Mo. 1847. Again I must take my pen and endeavor to record some of the trials through which we have had to pass, for the hand of affliction has fallen heavily on us of late, disease most dire has attacked our family, and two of our number have fallen victims to the all destroying hand of Death. Yes, sister Emeline and her lovely babe have gone to their final rest, and though their body's lie in the silent grave, there to mingle with kindred dust, still their spirits unencumbered of all the frailties of our nature have soared to the realms of light, where peace is known without alloy, where mother and babes are alike enjoying in boundless love. When reflecting I am often almost lost in thought, and acclaim mentally, impossible, it cannot be so, but am soon awakened to a consciousness of its sad reality, in the death of sister Emeline we experience an irreparable loss, she was ever the kind and faithful friend, performing the duties of active life with a feeling heart, and a cheerful countenance, she was truly benevolent and possessed a mild forgiving disposition. Our loss is indeed great, but her gain is far greater, her once tearful eyes can no more give vent, or suppress the pearly drops, she can no more experience the anguish of mind, and the various trials which beset us here on every side, her rest is come, she has finished her is now gone from works to reward and as her death was like her life, calm and peaceful, her reward is no doubt life eternal, her days have been well spent and full of usefulness, living in peace with all, she had many friends and but few enemies, her memory will long be cherished by those who knew her worth 7th Daniel Angel been here sick yesterday, gone home now. 12th Mercy West has been buried to day, the work of death is still going on, its ravinges are deeply felt in many familys as well as our own. Seymor West lost his child about 3 weeks since and now his wife. How fleeting are the things of earth, how uncertain is life, but a few short weeks ago many who were them taking an active part on the stage of life, are now slumbering in Death's long dreamless sleep. 14th Jason Angel has buried their babe to day. 15th Had a hard frost for two nights past. Days work, though her sun has set in its meridian splendors and I doubt not but she is reaping the rewards of the fruitful as she expected she should soon be at rest with the Lord, and when visuring her corpse as well as that of Louese and the babe, I thought, how lovely, yes, lovely in death for there was a sweet expression of countenance, a heavenly smile that rested on the features, tho motionless and bound in the icy arm of death. Emeline died on the 1st of the last mo., being sick 8 days. The babe died on the 13th with 6 days sickness. There has been 10 who have had dysentery at our house. 6 of our family and 4 of brothers Wm, and most of them sick at a time. Mary E. had it very bad for sometime, we hardly though she could recover. His morning sun has now set, ere it had verged near its meridian height, his mild unvarying disposition made him a pleasant and profitable companion for his young associates, as well as for those more advanced in life, and though young and amiable and highly deserving the esteem every one had for him, he was also a well prepared subject for becoming an inhabitant of the pure regions of bliss, where with the eyes of imagination we may behold his beautified spirit, as a radiant form rejoicing in the presence of the King Heaven, and Prince of Peace. 22nd Cousin Elizabeth Harkness and George Underwood been here. 25th Been to Adrian to day, took dinner at Joseph Cooper's. 28th Jervis and Sally Cheney spent the day here. 29th Been to Uncle John Underwood's to day. 30th Jane Vanaken took tea here. 11th Mo. 1847. 6th Benjamin Borton staid here last night, and gave us the sad account of his brother Bethwel's death. 11th Had an interesting visit from John Mott, his daughter Hannah and William Wilson. 14th Attended a meeting to day at the creek schoolhouse appointed by John Mott. 15th John Mott, Hannah and Sarah Angel staid here last night. 17th Spent the afternoon at Jervis Cheney's. 23rd Spent the afternoon at Orin Vanaken's. 28th Been up to meeting staid last night to David Bixby's.
