6. FIDELIA2 (HENRY1 THOMPSON) was born 31 Mar 1830 in Canandaigua, Ontario, NY5, and died 20 Feb 1913 in Michigan5.

She married EDWIN HARLEIGH BROCKWAY 26 Aug 1855 in Lansing MI6, son of ELISHA BROCKWAY and MARY LEMEN. He was born Abt.

1825 in NY, and died in Michigan.

Notes for FIDELIA: A Pioneer Gone to Rest. Fidelia S. Thompson was born March 31 1830, in Ontario county N.Y. She came

to Michigan while a girl. Mrs. Brockway died Feb. 20th 1913. Had she lived until the 31st of next month she would have

been 83 years old. Her death came as the result of a fall a few days before. In early life she laid the foundation for

a noble and useful career. While yet a girl she was converted and during the years that followed she developed into a

beautiful christian character. In 1855, Rev. E. H. Brockway was the Junior Methodist Preacher on the Mason charge.

At that same time Miss Fidelia Thompson was the Superintendent of the Mason Public school. On August 24th of that year

the preacher and the teacher were joined in Holy Wedlock and the two leaders began their 29 years of successful career

in the ministry. In all these years Mrs. Brockway was a helpmeet (helpmate?) indeed. Her heart was always full of love

for folks, and her hands were full of good deeds. She was unceasing in her efforts to bless people wherever she went.

She accompanied her husband a great deal in his pastoral labors. Her fertile brain was full of plans for the upbuilding

of the kingdom. During the three years they lived in Albion to educate their daughter, her husband preached in the neglected

fields outside. In Albion they not only educated their own daughter, but helped to educate many other young men and women.

Mrs. Brockway was a true mother to many. Their house was full of students and many of these were financially helped when

in their school course. She has even now many sons in the gospel whom her hands helped to bring to the day of their graduation.

Notes for EDWIN HARLEIGH BROCKWAY:REV. EDWIN HARLEIGH BROCKWAY is now a general farmer on a fertile tract of sixty-five acres,

located on section 31, Alaiedon Township, Ingham County. He was born in Dansville, Steuben County, N.Y., May 21, 1825. His

father, Elisha Wade Brockway, was born in Lyme, New London County, Conn., September 4, 1790. He was a farmer by calling,

though in earlier days he was employed as a schoolteacher and gained an enviable reputation in that direction. He removed to

New York in 1796 and lived there until 1829, clearing up a farm of wild land.

In 1829 our subject's father removed to Michigan and settled near Ann Arbor, where he lived for five years. In 1834 he removed

to Livingston County and located near Whitmore Lake, here he cleared up a farm of one hundred acres of wild land. During the first

year spent by the family in Michigan the members subsisted principally on corn bread. They had all the hardships incident to pioneer

life. Ann Arbor was at that time a village of only a few buildings. Our subject's mother, Mary Lemen, was also a native of Dansville,

N.Y., being born there September 9, 1802. She was a daughter of Samuel Lemen, a farmer of that place and died in 1874, at Byron,

Shiawassee County. Her husband preceded her by several years, his decease having taken place July 1, 1861, passing away in Constantine, Mich.

Edwin H. Brockway remained under the parental roof until twenty-two years of age, his attention being divided between his school

duties and those of the farm. After the years above mentioned he worked out for three and a half years on a farm and then entered

Albion College, where he remained for two years and then was admitted to the Detroit Methodist Episcopal Conference in the fall of 1854.

The first charge given to our subject as a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church was at Mason, where he remained for one year.

He then went to Chelsea, where he was located for two years, after which he spent two years in Blissfield, two years in Rome,

two years in Medina, two years in Franklin and then was variously stationed at Milford, Oakland County, and at Unadilla and Fowlerville,

then at Byron, Swartz' Creek, Gaines and Albion, where he remained three years in order to give his daughter educational advantages.

He then spent three years in Medina when he entered the list as a superannuated preacher in 1883, and purchasing the farm whereon he

now resides, has devoted himself to agricultural work the greater part of the time since then.

Mr. Brockway was married August 24, 1855, to Miss Cordelia (FIDELIA) S. THOMPSON, a daughter of (312) Henry Thompson, and a sister

of J. Q. Thompson, of Alaiedon. Two children have been the result of this union; Mary E., was born April 24, 1858. She has marked

ability in a musical direction and is a graduate from the conservatory of Albion College, where she spent four years. She is

now very successfully engaged as a teacher of music. Ida who was born July 18, 1865, is with her sister the life and light of

the home. In 1852 Mrs. Brockway came to Mason as an assistant teacher to a gentleman who had charge of the Mason schools. In a short

time the gentleman resigned in her favor. She had seventy pupils and taught for $1.50 per week, boarding around in the district.
