Zachariah Wallace, whose illness extended through several weeks, died at his home on North Michigan Avenue at two o'clock this morning. Mr. Wallace, who came to Big Rapids about fifteen years ago, was born in slavery about thirty years before the war, through which he served as a member of Co. H., First Michigan Colored Infantry, being mustered out at Charleston in '65. The records show him to have been a good soldier, and his industrious habits and general way of living caused him to be regarded a good citizen. A wife is the only relative he is known to have had in this section, but leaves two or more grown up children whose places of residence are unknown. The funeral is to be held at the M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, and as Post Andrews expects to attend in a body, it is requested that the members assemble at the hall at half past one. We understand that Mr. Wallace held a policy in the Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company to the amount of $1000.
