Hangstaffer Meat Market
North side of East Maple St.

William Hangstaffer, born Sept. 30, 1859 and came to Big Rapids in 1880. Wife Matilda. William drove team and wagon and stayed over night at "Weaver Schooil." He brought two sons with him. The rest of the family followed later.

Mrs. Jeanette M. Hangsraffer was born Sept. 3, 1883. She married Charles Hangstaffer in 1910 and moved to Big Rapids in 1906, residences at 121 2nd Avenue. She was the youngest of 13 children. Her parents were Sam and Nancy Eberly.

Chester Hangstafer owned the Hangstafer Meat Market for forty years. It stood the corner of Second and East Maple Rd.

1965 - One of the Big Rapids' special VIP's, Charles Hangstafer celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday.

Mr. Hangstafer, the father of Mrs. Lloyd Earl and Chet Hangstafer, and grandfather of Mrs. Al Grabosky, was in the wholesale and retail meat business here over 40 years; in the shop where Mondrella's now is till about 1910, and then on East Maple Street till about 1940. He's also a life member of the Mason's, and has probably taken the Pioneer as long as anyone in town. He is still active and alert, Mrs. Earl tells us, and can remember things that happened many years ago.

The Earls had a noon dinner for Mr. Hangstafer and his long time Bill Ryan of Linden on Wednesday, and Mrs. Anna VanAlstine, in whose Third Ave. home he has lived the past few months, entertained at a birthday party that evening.

We're proud to call attention to our hardy oldsters.

As we wrote Charles Hangstafer, who was 95 Wednesday, we wondered if he is the areas oldest resident. If any one knowns an older person living hereabouts, please tell us.
