George C. Acker

Colonel, 9th Michigan Cavalry

From Kalamazoo, George entered service as a Captain in Company I, 1st Cavalry on August 21, 1861, for 3 years service at age 24. Commissioned Major on September 2, 1862. Commisioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 9th Cavalry at its organization on November 3, 1862. Commissioned Colonel on November 30, 1863. Wounded in action at Bean's Station, Tn on December 14, 1863. Commanded 2nd Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division from July, 1864 to June, 1865. Discharged for disability on June 27, 1865. For gallant and soldierly conduct in all circumstances and especially for gallantry at Cynthiana, Ky, in June of 1864 he was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General of Volunteers. He died on September 6, 1879.
