From Maple Grove, Michigan, Isaac enlisted on September 2, 1864, as a Sergeant at Maple Grove, Michigan, for three years service at the age of 34. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant and later Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on December 20, 1865. He was mustered out at Raleigh, North Carolina, on June 5, 1866.
