From Dundee, Michigan, Lafayette enlisted on October 28, 1861, at Petersburg, Michigan, for 3 years service at the age of 20. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal before his discharged at the expiration of his term of service at Atlanta, Georgia, on October 31, 1864. His postwar address was McBain, Michigan.
