From Palmyra, Michigan, Chester enlisted on August 7, 1862 at Adrian, Michigan, for 3 years service at the age of 28. He took the muster oath on August 26, 1862. He served the rest of the war with the 18th and was mustered out with the rank of Corporal on June 26, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.He died on May 9, 1883, and is buried at Palmyra,
