Charles enlisted at Watrousville, Michigan, for 3 years service at age 35 on August 29, 1864. He was mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on September 6, 1865. His postwar residence was Fairgrove, Michigan. He is shown with his wife Margaret.

Charles Puffer was born September 6th, 1831 in Owego, Tioga Co.. NY, the youngest child of Ira John and Charity (Pangborn) Puffer (Dr. Timothy Puffer, Timothy, William, Richard, James, George). His father was a 1st cousin to Judge Daniel Cady of Johnstown, NY, the father of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the woman who started the Women's movement in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co. NY in 1846. Charles was raised with 12 other siblings, Rachel, unknown sister, Ira Jr., Mary, Timothy, Charlotte, Solomon, Nancy, Olive, Arvilla and Roxanne.

In 1854, Charles and his brother, Solomon left Seneca, Ontario Co. NY to join family members who had moved on west. They went as far as Lagrange Co. IN, where sister, Arvilla (Erastus Nelson) had settled. Solomon put down roots there until 1861 when he went on to St. Joseph Co. MI. Charles after a short stay in Lagrange Co. moved his family to St. Joseph Co., MI where sister's Olive (Ralph Sloan) and Roxanne (James M. Wood) had settled. After enlisting in the Civil War on August 29th, 1864, he had his family moved to Fairgrove, Tuscola Co. MI where sister Charlotte (Joseph Bishop) had settled in Millington, MI.

He enlisted in Company A , 29th Infantry, at Watrousville, for 3 yrs at age 35. He was light complexion, 5'' 6" tall, had black hair and blue eyes. He mustered out at Murfreesboro, TN on his birthday of 1865. He and his wife Margaret had children, Chauncey, Charles Henry, Sarah Alice, Ida May, James, John, Lillian, Bert and Florence. Charles and his family made a well respected name for themselves in the county of Tuscola.

Charles applied for and received a pension in 1889.
