From Ada, Michigan, he enlisted at age 26 for 3 years service as a Blacksmith on August 28, 1862 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Earl served the entire balance of the war with the famed Michigan Brigade commanded by George Armstrong Custer. He was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on June 21, 1865.
