Paul enlisted in Company G, 22nd Michigan Infantry, at age 30, on August 9, 1864 at Pontiac, Michigan. He reached the regiment at Chattanooga, Tn, on January 14, 1865. He was transferred to Company G, 29th Michigan Infantry on June 26, 1865, and served with that regiment until he was mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tn, on September 6, 1865.
