From Howell, Michigan, Franklin enlisted at age 18 in Company B of the 1st Michigan Lancers. He transferred to Company I of the 16th Michigan Infantry on February 28, 1862. He re-enlisted at Rappahannock, Va on December 22, 1863. Promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1865. Mustered out at Jeffersonville, Indiana, on July 8, 1865. Postwar address was Fowlerville, Michigan.
