From Lawrence, Michigan, Herrick enlisted in the 70th New York Infantry April 29, 1861 at Paw Paw, Michigan for 3 years service at age 22. He attained the rank of Corporal before being discharged for disability at Camp McMillan on October 21, 1861.

He re-entered service in the 17th Michigan Infantry on May 29, 1862, at Lawrence, Michigan, as a Sergeant for 3 years service. He was wounded in action at Antietam, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, receiving gunshot wounds to the left leg and left chest. His brother Orin, also in the 17th Company I was wounded 2 days earlier at the Battle of South Mountain. Herrick survived the wounds and was discharged for disability on June 1, 1863 at Detroit, Michigan. His post war residence was South Haven, Michigan.
