Jonathan enlisted on August 7, 1863 at Farmington, Michigan, for 3 years service at the age of 20 as an Artificer. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on January 10, 1865. He was mustered out of the service at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 22, 1865.
