From Ann Arbor, Halsey enlisted September 18, 1861, at Ann Arbor, for 3 years, age 33. He was transferred to Company G before he was Killed in Action at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862, having taken part in all of the "7 Days Battles" on the Peninsular until his death.
