Also spelled Burnes in the records, Lewis enlisted in the 13th Battery on August 13, 1864, at Grand Rapids for 1 year of service at age 29. He reached the Battery then at Fort Foote, Maryland, on August 27, 1864. He mustered out at Jackson, Michigan, on July 1, 1865.
