From Ovid, Micihigan, Lorenzo enlisted in Company B, 4th Cavalry as a Corporal, July 28, 1862 at Ovid for 3 years service at age 20. Promoted to Sergeant December 20, 1863. Quartermaster Sergeant March 1, 1863. 1st Sergeant April 1, 1863. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company H on December 10, 1864. He mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on July 1, 1863
