He mustered in with Company B, 3rd Michigan Cavalry as a 1st Lieutenant in 1861 (age 34). He was released from the 3rd in 1862 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In 1862 he mustered in with Company G, 5th Michigan Cavalry as a Captain. He served as the Commanding Officer of Company G until August 1864. He resigned his commission (just after the battle of Trevillian Station) citing a surgeon's certificate. Sometime thereafter, he moved back to his home state of New York (just east of Buffalo) . He died in 1910 at the age of 84. He is buried in Akron, New York.
