From St. Clair County, Charles enlisted for 3 years on October 31, 1861, at Port Huron at the age of 27. Promoted to Sergeant on January 5, 1864. He re-enlisted on the same day at Mossy Creek, TN. Promoted to 1st Sergeant before he was mustered out at Macon, GA, on August 17, 1865.
