From Detroit, Michigan, John enlisted at Detroit for 3 years service at the age of 35 on August 30, 1861. He served with the Regiment until he was listed as "Missing in Action" on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This was later changed to "Presumed Dead" and he is thought to have been buried as an "unknown" at Gettysburg.
