William enlisted in Company B as a Corporal at Fort Wayne on June 19, 1861 at the age of 23. He was promoted to Sergeant on October 18, 1861, then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on October 1, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on August 23, 1864. He attained the rank of Captain on November 25, 1864. He was mustered out of the service at New Orleans, La, on August 20, 1865, and returned to his home in St Joseph.
