Alfred G. Ryder

Company H, 1st Michigan Cavalry

From Livonia, Michigan, Alfred enlisted on August 16, 1861 at Plymouth, Michigan, at the age of 20. He was captured at the battle of Bull Run, Virginia, on August 30, 1862. Later exchanged and returned to regiment. He was promoted to Corporal on June 30, 1863. He was shot in the left arm and lung on July 3, 1863. His father, George came to the hospital on East High Street to nurse him to no avail. He died on July 22, 1863, and was temporarily buried at the German Reformed Church. His body was exhumed and sent home on November 19, 1863. His 20 year old brother John F. Ryder was killed at the same battle on July 1, 1863, while serving with the 24th Michigan Infantry.
